NWR: Phoo

So Matt works at Round Table Pizza as a delivery boy at the moment (which makes a surprising amount of money actually. Not tons, but more than I thought it would), which means that usually he eats before coming home or brings something back for the both of us. This works well as far as free food goes! But unfortunately, I've been wanting to make a surprise dinner for the two of us. I'm...not particularly good at cooking (especially meat. I can do vegetarian food muuuch better than meat food), but wanted to try anyway. However, there's no real good way to go about that when you have the following obstacles:1) Two roommates who don't exactly make for a romantic setting and/or will make fun of me for doing it (and thus annoy the crap out of me).2) I can't tell Matt not to eat while at work or bring something home without ruining the surprise. He figures things out too easily. To this I say: grrr.3) He works evening shift so I tend to be in bed before he comes home anyway cuz I've gotta be somewhere at 7am, which means waking up at 5:30am or so.So I'll just have to hold off on this particular romantic endeavor for now. Phooey-phooey-phoo-phoo.So because I'm bored and procrastinating, tell me about things that circumstance has voided for you lately, whether in regard to your relationship or something else. It will please me :P

I would just say you're making dinner so save room and make the surprise be what you made.  And tell the roommates to make themselves scarce for the night.  :-)I don't have any recipes to share really. And as for the thing that went wrong, is that what you were asking for?  I guess my latest thing is my no so fun trip to Vegas but it wasn't so bad.  I appreciate it more now that I'm back and working hard.

I suppose I could just let the "what" of dinner be a surprise, but my obstacle then would be not falling asleep before he got here :P I might try for it on a day he gets off at 8 or so if I can. And I have...issues, with our roommates. One's not so bad, but can't really go anywhere as he doesn't have a car and we live out in the middle of nowhere (and he has no light in his room). And the other...well, let's just say he would not only not listen to me if I ask him to "be scarce," but would likely go out of the way to be anti-scarce. Why wasn't your Vegas trip much fun? Did you make a post of that and I missed it?

There's no specific post about it but I mentioned it wasn't as fun as I expected because FI was working 10-12 hours a day, I was jetlagged, and I spent too much money.  But now that I'm back at work and it's cold and rainy, I miss Vegas a whole lot.As for the roommates, that sucks.  I dealt with roommates from hell with my ex and vowed after that to never date someone with roommates again. I would just cook your dinner and hope they don't get in your way too much.

Awww. Boo! That's too bad. I've only been to Vegas once, and it was work related and I was only...19 at the time, I think? So I couldn't even DO anything when I wasn't attending seminars! Did you at least get a chance to spend some quality time with your FI?I would, at the very least, not have moved in with with a guy who had roommates, but Matt and I were roommates before we started dating and were already living with two of them (only one of which is still here. The New Guy is the problem roommie), so it was kinda an accident :P I'll probably end up making a rant post about Bad Roommie one of these days.I'll probably just do it eventually. A Wednesday night might work, as Bad Roommie tends to not be home til late on that day. I just need to think of something yummy and somewhat easy to make that won't poison him XD (I'm a terrible cook :P)

Oh ok, I hope the dinner is good.  I can't think of a suggestion as I'm not a great chef either but I love lasagna.

I have a couple of things to say! (imagine that)1) One time I tried to surprise FI (then BF) with dinner, and I decided to get those fake-chicken strips and do pasta. Well... he made me mad about something.... OH YEAH! He told me earlier in the day that my cooking was bland (I'm from the north, he's from the south), so I went WAY overboard on the spices and even added tobasco trying to make sure it wasn't bland. It was so hot our lips went numb after one bite, and it hurt our stomachs to eat it. I gave him the evil eye until he got through half of his, then said "Spicy enough for you?"He has never complained about my cooking since.2) Maybe you should forget fancy dinner and do fancy brunch instead!!! Pancakes, fried potatoes (or hash browns), gravy, biscuits, fruit, coffee, juice.... just get up early and go all-out!Surely your roommates are doing SOMETHING in the late morning. Work? School? Sleeping in like bums?Or, do a picnic. We did that once and it was a lot of fun! Plan it for his day off, and tell him not to make any plans. Then don't tell him where you're going and surprise him. Heck, even a backyard picnic can be very romantic!Good luck!

Breakfast sounds like a fun idea too.  Or a picnic.  Gosh I used to have all these romantic ideas too once!  Now we're lame but I did get a surprise rose today which was really nice.

I don't have any advice regarding planning special diners, because I'm not terribly romantic.  However, if you like Italian food, I recommend trying the Everyday Italian recipes on food network!  I don't cook very much, but every recipe I've tried so far has turned out really well.  They're very easy. For part two, I've been really stressed/depressed about my work/school situation and it's been affecting my relationship a little.  Apparently I've been distant and no fun lately.

I'm not generally very romantic either, but I feel like I haven't been doing enough to make Matt feel appreciated lately. So I figured making something tasty for him would fix that right up!Hopefully you can find some way to relax a bit. It sounds like you could use it. Got any hot springs near you?  That's one of my favorite ways to relax.

That's funny- my BF is always telling me to go in the hot tub to relax.  Of course, I hate the hot tub.  It's too...well, hot.

You have a hot tub at your house, ana?  If so, we're so trading.  :-)I have one at the gym I spend time in after my water aerobics class and I love it, but if it were in the house, well that would definitely relax me.

Hmmm...let's see. Maybe a good, long massage from your BF could help? Or, if you're like me, going store-to-store to marvel at all the Christmas decorations and buying a few. That's a definite way to make me giddy as a school-girl! Anything like that for you?

nqb- yes I'm very spoiled! And I'm obsessed with Christmas too!  It was so hard for me to wait until Nov. 1 to start listening to Christmas music!  I already went out and got Christmas scented candles. Now I just need a dozen cats and my future as a single cat and candle-loving old lady is set.

I love cats and candles too so we're set to switch lives any day now.  :-)Christmas music this early seems crazy to me but I'm in Christmas denial this year since Thanksgiving and dealing with ILs is already driving me crazy!

Now I just need a dozen cats and my future as a single cat and candle-loving old lady is set.I'm not allowed to put any decorations up until after Thanksgiving. Matt and the roomies are against me and being scrooges. Boo! So I'm trying to get a good stockpile of Christmas stuff going so that the house will have a mini-explosion of it the moment I get back here after Thanksgiving.I've totally got the cat angle covered. I've got four here! And a Bumble Dog. :P

I grow them thar kitties big (the orange and cream colored fluffy ones are largely Maine coon. The gray one's just plain fat, and the one looking at us is the only normal sized one I have. 12 pounds. Which some tell me is still big).

They're adorable! :) Yay, kitties! I have a big orange guy myself, about 20 lbs, and a smaller girl kitty about 8 pounds. They're good company, but man do I hate to scoop poop. I can't imagine having twice as much to deal with! You're a brave soul. :)

Why dont you do a picnic in your room. That way you two could have a romantic setting, without bothering the roomates. You could do it also on one of his days off if you really want to be a surprise.
  • edited December 2011
Zip.. I definately understand how it can be hard being romantic when he gets off at night.. on the weekends i work until 10pm but sometimes when we have things to do all day and arent able to talk as much, we miss each other. Or other times he will just go to spend the weekend with his parents then we dont see each other all weekend. So when that would happen I would always try to do something Sunday night that was romantic. It all depended on when i could get off work. Sometimes on Sundays I would try to see if the incoming staff could come in at 8 or even 9. If she would come in at 8 i would race home to cook a dinner then get ready while it was cooking. But on other nights where i could only get off early at about 9 then i would just get ready at work to look cute when i got off work then i would run by Dairy Queen to get him his favorite blizzard or if i cant get there in time (they close by 10 here) then i would run by sonic and get him a sundae or something. Another thing I do when i was pressed for time to where i couldnt cook, and a warning here depending on yours/his tastes this can get expensive... I only do this on special ocassions when I cant cook anything.. I would go to the resturants we like in town and order our favorite things and make a dinner out of it... Like for example: We both love the quesdillas from chilles, the rolls from Ocharley's(who doesnt) and this brocilli casserole from cheddars then the chips and salsa with cheese dip from our favorite mexican place... things like that... order his and your favorites... This is a fun idea for a picnic (we had it in our living room floor) Also this can be done during the day whenever you have free time or when theyre open... then ask the staff there whats the best way to heat it up.. if they work there then they will probably know from experience.. Or Sometimes when i've had a hard day and i'm craving cheese dip he'll go get me mexican from our favorite resturant and it'll be waiting for me when i get home.. So good!!!

Growing up my mom always cooked everything kind of bland so that you could season it to your own liking. I just always preferred to skip the seasoning, sometimes I went crazy and added pepper. lol BF is a hot sauce junkie so it's taken some adjustments over the years.
