Yes, well enough to feed myself and others in a reasonably tasty fashion. I wouldn't make claims to being some sort of master chef, though.I read cookbooks and make the things in them. If I don't like what I made, I either stop making that thing or try to modify the recipe so it turns into something I like. And I ask my mom for advice a lot.
Yes,, I never follow a recipe exactly more than once.. Mom says I learned as self defense. My mom is not a cook at all. We ate lots of hamburger helper as a kid. I learned from hanging out at my aunt's house across the road. She is a wonderful baker AND cook. Also, my grandmother used to make me stir the roux while she prepped the rest of teh gumbo, so I learned patience in the kitchen at an early age.

I love cooking! I like to try different things. I learned to cook by watching my mom and helping her. Then when I was living bymyself, I started with simple recipies then did more difficult things later on.
I've been cooking/baking since I was about 12. My son started baking at 9 and he'll be 12 in a couple weeks, already he's better than me. He doesn't really like to cook as much bake, which is ok - He makes some fantastic brownies

Yes I can cook. Not gourmet, buy I can feed myself. As soon as I was tall enough to reach the counter I was making dinner for the family. Mom claimed it was to teach me, I think she was just lazy.
What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests. Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
YesMy mom, and my great-aunt. Sadly, I don't get to practice too much on the DH - I've made him a pot roast, cookies, a french silk pie, dinner rolls, and some other small things. Most of what I'm good at, he doesn't eat; so I have to wait for potlucks or parties where I can take food.

Yes, I'm a good cook. Not really sure how I learned -- I guess from watching people, experimenting, asking my mom lots of questions (mostly after I had already left the house), trying recipes from cookbooks and attempting to re-create what I've eaten in restaurants. DH is an excellent cook and he does a lot of experimenting to re-create what he's eaten in restaurants. He does most of our day-to-day cooking and I cook when I'm "in the mood."
Negative....I'm a girl who has microwaved spaghetti, and once bought the "egg wave" in a horrific attempt to microwave those too. Not the best idea on any of the above.My mom and Grandma's cooked a lot when I was growing up but for whatever reason I was also a really picky eater. I guess not learning to cook was an extension of sorts. Fi is a big time cooking/food guy, and has been trying very hard to coach me into at least the basics. He's doing pretty well with getting me to try new things...the cooking part is still touch and go

yes1 part necessity and 2 parts observation. I was home alone after school pretty much from age 10 on, so I had to fend for myself a lot of times. I started asking my mom how to make some things, and over time I just learned. Everything I learned from my mom or grandma is in my head--they don't cook with recipes--but I also get a lot of recipes from allrecipes.com or from friends, etc. and then just tweak them where I see fit. Other things I just make up entirely.
Sort of.I made a New Year's resolution to learn how to cook Italian one year. Two cookbooks and many episodes of Everyday Italian/Barefoot Contessa later I think I can manage.

You tell me. Things I make: grilled cheese, quesadillas, english muffin pizzas, baked ziti (once, but it came out well!), salad, frozen stuff. I can also make frozen veggies.I don't consider it cooking.

CS, doesn't having nice cookware make it easier to cook, or at least more likely? To me, it makes all the difference.I love cooking and am not too shabby, but I was a late bloomer. I first learned how to cook in this tiny but fancy schmany restaurant I served in for 3 years. It was an old stone building and I was the only server besides the owner, and we'd make stuff tableside and flambe it to the ceiling for show (like Steak Diane, Bananas Foster, Crepes Suzette, etc.). I learned how to make real, everyday food shortly after. Then when I moved to the east coast for grad school 4 years ago, I had to learn all my mom's Korean recipes by watching her, because she didn't ever write anything down. There's no way I was going for years without homemade kimchi, and I just refuse to buy storebought kimchi. H is also very picky about vegetables he won't eat, so it's forced me to be more creative in finding new recipes for us to eat healthy. It's actually turned out to be a good thing to broaden my recipe stash.

Missy, bring your pot roast and chocolate pie over here. I will totally taste test it for you. I know what it's like to have a picky H. Their loss. Though if you really make homemade rolls, my H would probably leave me for you. I don't bake bread (except quickbreads like banana).
