It's. Not. Reading. It's LISTENING.

I have no idea why this bothers me so much. I think because when you read, you use your imagination- you give the characters voice, you decide (to some extent) where they will emphasize the words in a sentence or how much they might huff or sob or any other action that isn't specifically written out. Honestly, you use your brain to give voice and life to the characters. When you listen, someone else does that for you. I really don't think it's that far from watching the movie, and it bothers me. A lot. I wouldn't be bothered by it if someone said "Oh, I listened to that book," because that is an accurate statement. But "I read that book," is not accurate, and I am unreasonably pissed off by audio book people because I think they're lying liars who lie. You read with your eyes, liars.

I guess to physically say "I read that book" is a lie if you listened to it. But I don't think anything less of someone if they listened to the book over reading it. Some people are slow readers, some just spend a ton of time in the car and figure it's a good way to pass time.

I don't think it's the same as watching the movie, because you are still hearing all the descriptors about the scenes and the actions the characters are making. You can just as easily get a mental image from hearing the desciption as you can from reading it. I get that you can't control how you hear each character's voice, but that's really NBD to me. The voice in my head would be how I heard it. Just like if I read a book after the movie is already out, I picture the actress, no matter how she is described. For example, while reading Something Borrowed and Something Blue, I pictured Kate Hudson and Gennifer Goodwin, and now reading Water For Elephants I'm picturing Reese and RP.

But yeah, I do not care for audio books, even though I have never tried. My dad is all into them but I have heard a few snippets but I do not like the voices. I like to put my own voices in there
