We've been debating alternatives. (My priorities lie with photography, not the cake.) A lot of people seem shocked when we told them we're not interested in spending $3.50/slice. One thing we're looking at is either doing 5 or 6 single layer or pound cakes on pretty platters or maybe just these AMAZING famous local donuts.
I think that is such on original idea!!! far away from the classic wedding, I think is very clever ! normally not everyone eats or likes cake for dessert and a lot just stays on the tray or it's taken home by the guests. ! I think most of us brides choose to have a cake for the famous "cake cutting moment" if you will not miss that you are doing somethini much more original and unforgetable .
FYI: cupcakes are still cake though. Just in a different presentation. The recipes and ingredients are the same.
We're leaning toward a dessert buffet at this point. While cakes are pretty and usually yummy, we'd prefer to serve other desserts instead, such as cheesecake, etc.
I don't want a cake becuase I don't want to pay the $500 I was quoted. Am I just being cheap? This was the cheapest I could find.... I like that doghnut idea though!

You know those giant cookie cakes at the mall? We're doing those, in tiers. (It looks like I'm going to have to custom build the cake stand.) We're also going to have cookies, truffles, mini cheesecakes, and chocolate covered pretzels, all made by yours truly, assuming I can actually get through all that baking and decorating.
We're having birthday cake at the "rehearsal" lunch since MOH and my brother and sister have their birthdays within two days of the wedding, but that's probably just going to be a basic grocery store cake.
Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. I did end up ordering cake, but I was able to cut the price down by $200 by doing a fairly small tiered cake that has this beautiful scrolling that I loved, and then I'm having two simply decorated sheet cakes that are just as tasty as the regular cake.
Just thought I'd throw this out there...it's a great way to cut cake costs. However, I did have to suggest it to my baker, she kept trying to talk me into a big, cheap, ugly cake.
Cookie cake is my favorite thing ever! Yummy! I've talked to several bakerys about the sheet cake thing and although they're hesitant to respond most have quoted me a much cheaper price for a small cake and a larger sheet cake. I found an amazing bundt cake company this weekend, which we're going to use. But, I'm still thinking about throwing some donuts out there. Yum!

We are going to have family friends bake pies for us. I've only been to a couple weddings where the wedding cake was any good. Everybody I've told this too doesn't understand why we won't be having cake though.

I am doing three cheesecakes decorated by a baker for display and cake cutting purposes only. Then I am buying pre-sliced cheesecake from Sam's and bring that out after we cut the cake. I am also going to do a toppings bar so everyone can have what they want. The pre-sliced cakes are inexpensive and very tasty. We are having 250 guests so this is a wonderful option for us.

I too am not crazy about having cake...so expensive for flour, sugar and water! I really like the idea of creating a desert table. Anyone know of any vendors?
We had a small 2 tier cake for cutting because our dinner package came with dessert. But we also had a cookie bar where we put the few pieces of cake we had.
A friend of mine did this at her wedding...she had only one layer that was real cake - the rest was foam cut outs that were decorated to look like a fancy cake...she had a big sheet cake in the back that was super cheap and super easy to slice and serve for all of her guests....she did her top layer as the "real" cake, which she froze for her first anniversary...the caterer had a slice of the sheet cake hidden behind the cake so that they could do use that to feed each other! She got a friend's mom to decorate the cake with fondant since she's been doing it as a hobby and was itching to get some practice - and all she had to do was pay the cost of the fondant. It worked out to be wow-worthy AND budget friendly....
We are doing apple crisp. we both really don't like cake and we are having a fall/harvest wedding. We are going to serve it warm with local ice cream. We are both really excited about this. And the other factor is that my mom is gluten intolrent and apple crisp can be gluten free.
We had a dessert table! Different friends made their signature cakes....and the bride and groom chose their favorites to cut. We had SO many compliments and positive comments. Several of my (the MOG) friends cut the other desserts. It's an idea!

Well we will be serving two of the layers so they arent wasted and freezing the smallest. Then to make up the difference we will be buying presliced cake. I dont like the look of the sliced cake which is the reason for paying someone to make the three cakes.

one thing i was thinking was doing a mousse or pudding tower. have it in plastic champagne or martini cups, but what just popped into my head is just getting regular jello pudding cups... which i averaged 44 cents each HAHA and doing the same thing.... gonna have to think about that... might be a little tacky, but at least we could get different flavors.... hmmm.... my fiance and i really don't like cake or anything like cake.... i have heard of the donut idea... we are still undecided. we just book our venue today good luck
I'm on a tight budget so im makin an angel food cake with strawberry ooze in the middle, and iced in satin whip cream like icing with additional strawberries. I think for decorative purposes im gonna get plastic see-thru monarch butterfiles that can be bought for a nickle each. Why spend a ton of money yea its pretty but that money can go toward something more memorable.
We have a friend making our cake for $250 for 165 people. But if I wasnt getting a good deal on cakes I would have homemade pies set up on some pretty stands...I love that idea & the cookie bar idea, that would be so much fun! I think guests would like the variety.
