Palladium?

I'm a bride with an allergy to metal, particularly nickel, which is what most jewelers use to make white gold.  My engagement ring is set in white gold, which isn't usually a problem unless my hands get wet (then I break out).  So I usually take my engagement ring off for swimming, washing dishes, showering, etc.  But I don't want to do that with my wedding band; I want to always keep it on for sentimental reasons.  I looked online and saw that two options for hypoallergenic rings are palladium, platinum, and titanium.  Platinum is way out of our budget, and titanium is a little dark to match my engagement ring.  Does anyone have any thoughts (positive or negative) on palladium rings?  TIA!

Re: Palladium?

  • My engagement ring is palladium, and I adore it.  FI did his homework and found a metal that was still fairly cost effective, but uncommon.  We found a great ring in palladium for him, and I'm getting my wedding band custom made out of palladium because we couldn't find anything I liked.

There are a few downsides, though; it's a somewhat unique metal, which means that the selection is pretty drastically limited.  Because it's softer than platinum, it can't do all of the fancy frilly things that platinum can.  We priced out nearly a dozen different wedding rings, only to find that none of them were available in palladium.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • If you have an allergy to nickel and your white gold ring is bothering you than I would say go with the palladium.

If someone was just trying to save money I wouldnt go with the palladium. I too did research on it and decided againt it b/c number 1 there isn't much research on the quality and number two I read that it tarnishes quicker than white gold or platinum.

But you can't help your allergy so i say go with it :)
  • DH ring is palladium and the only down side is that it's a softer metal than most.  He works with computers so his job isn't physically demanding and he's already managed to take a small (I mean barely noticeable but still...) chunk out of it.  This also means it scratches easily.  Luckily we have lifetime care for our rings so I take it in every 6 months to get it polished and cleaned.

Just be careful with your ring and you should be fine.

  • My e-ring is palladium, and we are planning to order the wedding ring in palladium as well.  Palladium is awesome!  It is hypo-allergenic and super-cost effective compared to platinum. Actually palladium is much more durable than gold.  It doesn't easily dent.  It is also less likely to tarnish than white gold.  See:  http://www.lussori.com/what-is-palladium.html

Palladium isn't as common as gold or platinum, but there are still many stores that sell palladium.  Most really good jewelry stores offer palladium as an option, but the mall or chain stores aren't likely to have it.  FI bought my e-ring at Uniondiamond.com and they have tons of palladium options.

    Good luck.
