In Response to Re: Anyone around for an Evening Thread? : Ugh, yes! I feel like someone on here recently asked what Uff Da was. It is funny because I didn't realize people outside of MN would actually NOT know what it means. Its just something I say all the time, <strong>when lifting something heavy, or plopping on the couch after I'm tired, etc.</strong> :)
Posted by musicalsunlight
EXACTLY!  These are always the two examples I use when trying to explain it to someone.

Angel - it's kinda like a "whew that was heavy" or "a man I'm tired."  I have no idea what it truly means (if anything) but it's just an expression that apparently only Minnesotans use and understand.

• It makes sense that other areas would not know what Uffda is. I just never thought about it until recently. Must've just stuck around in these parts because of all the Swedish, Norweigan, & other Scandinavian immigrants that came here so long ago, haha.
It does kind of crack me up because everyone assumes everyone from Minnesota talks like that.  I lived there for 18 years and had only met one person who really had the "Minnesotan" accent ala the mom from Bobby's World. Although it took a lot of practice to cut Uff Da from my regular vocabulary. <strong> Have you ever tried to explain Uff Da to someone?  It doesn't end well.</strong>

<div>Believe it or not, we've discussed Uff Da around here before at least once :).</div>
• Hi!

Aryn!  You have a face! and it's so pretty!

Also, yeah, I figure nessie is Kwills too.

So, i came in to E about ten minutes after the vlogs, so i missed them all. Musu, i just enjoyed yours very much.  your accent is adorable. I have "no" accent.  I'm from Florida originally which (according to IPA) is Standard American.  When i'm distressed I get very Southern, however.
The Yooper version of "Uff Da" is "Holy Wah". It's sort of like "duuuuude", as in: "Holy wah! I can't believe youse just drank an entire two-fer of beer!" God I miss living up there. :)

I've never actually been to the UP so I've never experience the accent but I'll take your word for it :)

• From Wikipedia (so reliable, i know):

"Uff da is often used in the Pacific Northwest and Upper Midwest as a term for sensory overload. It can be used as an expression of surprise, astonishment, exhaustion, relief and sometimes dismay. For many, Uff da is an all-purpose expression with a variety of nuances, and covering a variety of situations. The expression has lost its original connotation, and it is increasingly difficult to specify what it means now in America. Within Scandanavian-American culture, Uff da frequently translates into: I am overwhelmed."

• Oh my gosh! I didn't even notice Aryn. I'm so used to seeing her boots, so I kind of just skimmed by without noticing who it was. Cute picture! :)
• Youse guys.. I can't stand that phrase.  Some of my friends parents (in WI growing up) used it and it drove me CRAZY.

Didja see da turdy pointer?  Da turdy point buck..

Yes, this is much better than my he-at.

ETA:  I re-read that and it seemed really biitchy sounding but I was being serious.  That was a much better way of explaining it than I did.

haha thanks! I love that there is a "standard american" accent, lol. I just think of the bland accent that actors use in movies when someone says something like that. There are definitely a huge variety of accents in FL. Sesh has an awesome super strong one, and then LDY has like a hybrid cute one too.
image
• Yea, I've never thought of Floridians as having an accent at all. Mine isn't normally too bad since I grew up in Raleigh and Raleigh has such a mixture of people it's hardly southern at all in some places. Get a couple drinks in me though and I pronounce 'yall' like 'yaawweell'
• So why is Nessie kwills?

haha that is weird because I've never heard someone say "yous guys". I thought that was more of an east coast thing? I just remember Mel mentioning it in her vlog.

Da turdy pointer oh YAH I seen it! ;) Gosh that is exactly how my FIL talks. Exactly.

<div>because she's new but is super eager to JOIN IN.  Just like Kwills did the last two times.</div><div>
</div><div>And yeah, Raleigh doesn't have an accent, really,  but then you drive 15 minutes and it's cows.  And accents.  </div><div>
</div><div>As for Florida, it depends on which parts- if you're in the panhandle or inland there's a strong southern accent.  within 20 miles of the ocean though, and there's no accent.</div><div>
</div><div>ETA: Ocean or GULF, there's no accent.  Silly MUNI grew up in the Gulf.</div>

• I lurked for a year and still didn't know much about the regs until I started posting more. Even now, I really only know much about night time regs.

Night loopy!

<div>This makes me think of my cousin in NO. He didn't realise that the rest of the country doesn't celebrate Mardi Gras the way they do there until he was like 16 or something haha.</div>
• I'm drinking the whipped cream vodka and orange juice I posted about the other night... it's yummy and it's definitely taking the edge off the anxiety I've been feeling since the encounter with my sister. I wish I had wine though... I should have saved it for tonight instead of drinking it last night! Liquor stores close at 9 here, which is way too early, if you ask me!

• Yea, I need to head to bed too. Work in the morning and all that. Night ladies!
• I only lurked for about a month.  But i tried to get my post count up a bit before jumping in completely- I made sure I was at least close to bronze and had a sig before jumping into a chatty thread.   I had a feel for the board, but didn't know anything about specific posters.
• Good night Labella!

That is funny, Poke.

• I'm pretty sure my first post that I tried to direct at a specific poster was something to either Fishy or Andy, since they were local and liked sports. haha. Fishy was the first 'reg' to say something to me and I felt so special because zomg she had like 18000 posts.
