T.G.I.F.

Happy, Numbers? :)

I slept like crap last night; I bet I didn't get more than 4 hours of sleep (even though I was in bed for 8).  I have no clue why, and I'm already crabby at work... and I'm not even there yet.  It should be a fun day, but at least I get to wear jeans.

How's everyone else?

Re: T.G.I.F.

  • Morning. I'm so over this week. Long days of training, doctors, headaches. I want to sleep in!

I went to the physical therapy place yesterday and made an appointment for next Wednesday. So hopefully they can work their magic and fix me. If not, I'll try the scary chiropractor. I just want the aching and throbbing to stop.

Today photographers from a local magazine are coming to my house to take some pictures. The magazine is doing a feature on my book for their May 2nd edition, so I'm excited about that. I just have to get home in time to put on some makeup and make myself look decent.

Good morning. I slept like crap too. Our a/c has been on the fritz all week long, so I was cooking all night and kept tossing & turning.

I know I chose this profession, but working in customer service really is a thankless job. We have an ID card issuing desk in our office, and the people that call in requesting information or to book an appt for their ID cards are such assholes. It's like they think that since they can't see us, they can treat us like second-class citizens. Motherfucker, I've been in the service almost a decade, and YOU want something from ME, so call back when you lose your attitude.

I think I need more coffee...this is going to be the longest Friday known to mankind. And we have a rehearsal dinner to go to tonight, and then Will's going throwing his buddy's bachelor party. I will be at home, blissfully enjoying my bottle of wine and watching a movie in my sweatpants.

    ETA: Congrats Sesh! That's awesome!

  • Hi girls!  I'm back!  It was an AMAZING trip.  I'll post some pictures once I can get them from DH.  We got in last night (this morning) around 1 and I went to bed around 2:30 and I made the only available appointment to finally see the ENT at 7:30 this morning.  It HAD to get done and I have a day off so I can just sleep later!

Anyway, today will be filled with about 5 loads of laundry...nothing is worse then opening your stinky luggage when you get home.
It's time. Adoption saving and process started in November 2012.

  • Mehg- I *completely* understand.  I've been in some type of customer service role since I was 16, and people really are assholes

When I was in college, I worked for the dorms on campus.  WTF is with the whole 'helicopter' parents trend?  Do you see any of that where you work? I'm assuming not, but it really wouldnt' surprise me.  We'd have so many parents call "my son doesn't get along with his roommate... what can I do? What are you going to do to make it all better?"  Um. I'm going to tell your song to STFU and act like an adult.
  • Hi everyone!

    Yay, Sesh! That sounds awesome.

Barb--glad you had a good trip!

Today should be an easy day for me.  Our juniors are having "Career Day" so I won't meet with one of my classes and then I have my prep period, so I'll have a nice long stretch of silence.  Hopefully I can get a ton of homework done in that time. Tomorrow we have an appointment with a florist to see mock-up centerpiece, so that could be good.
  • Happy Fridayyyy!  This week seemed to blow by for me, and thank goodness for that!  Today is the first Friday H has worked since last August so I took steaks out so we can celebrate tonight.  Woot woot! (We're chicken people usually lol)

Also, we're in the market for patio/deck furniture - dining set, fire pit and seating area - anyone have any recs of where to look?  We don't want to spend thousands but we want something of decent quality that we won't have to replace next summer.  We're probably going to go to Target and check their stuff out this weekend.

    Have a great day everyone!

My tomato seeds came in the mail yesterday - i planted them lastnight! I didnt get the orange beefsteaks I ordered for some reason (didnt tell me) but I got 2 other varieties I didnt ask for. It took 2 weeks to get them to me, so even if I complained and got the right ones it would be too late to plant them so I just let it be.

I just cant wait for this evening. Just cause. No real reason, just love the weekend. Its supposed to rain all weekend though so I doubt I will yet the yardwork done that I want to :(

I have a friend who works in a department at our university that is solely dedicated to fielding calls from parents.  That is literally all they do, all day long.  They sit on the phone all day and say, "I'm sorry sir/ma'am, but as your daughter/son is 18 years of age we cannot give out any information regarding XYZ." Then the parent screams at them.

Mehg, I'm sorry that really sucks.  I always try to be nice to people when I call somewhere, even when they seem to not be in the best mood.  I feel like if I'm nicer than most people who call in, maybe it  will make their day a little bit easier and I'll more than likely get my problem resolved.  I just don't get yelling at the people you need help from KWIM?

  • Steph, from time to time we get the parents who call while their kids are in bootcamp. There's not shiit we can do for them, since 1) We're in Miami Beach and our bootcamp is in Cape May, NJ, and 2) You're not allowed to receive phone calls while you're at bootcamp unless it's a dire emergency. You'll just have to wait for your handwritten letters just like everyone else's parents. Junior is a big boy, he's fine. When kids go to bootcamp, their parents should actually hope to not get anything from their kids. That means they're busy and doing well. It's when they're having problems that you get the phone calls.

Our worst caller in recent history was a woman who was curious about this helicopter of ours that went down and wanted to know the name of the pilot since the news didn't mention his name. I didn't know his name because we're not privy to that info, and even if I did know it, I couldn't tell her anyway. We're not at liberty to give out names of people until the families are notified, that's why the news didn't say his name in the first place. This woman was shouting at my subordinate, demanding to speak to her supervisor, so I took over the call.

She started screaming at me as soon as I introduced myself. I asked her to calm down because I couldn't understand a word she was saying, and she shouted, "I am the American public, goddammit! I have a RIGHT to know this information. You're the COAST GUARD, you're a quasi-military service (umm, fuckyouverymuch too, you twat, we ARE the military) and you have to do what I say! If I'm raising my voice to you, it's because I'm upset!! I'm allowed to be upset!". No matter what I said, I couldn't calm her down, so my supervisor got involved and wound up forwarding her call to our public affairs office, who no doubt told her the exact thing we told her, which was "Mind your own damn business".

  • Thanks for understanding, ladies. 99% of the time, I love my job. I'm good at it, I know my shiit, I'm awesome. But, it's the people who are having a bad day and want to take it out on anyone who they need something from that ruin it for me.

We have this running joke in our office that we need to "Act Disney". As in, answer the phone with a smile on our face (people can sense your tone on the phone) and go the extra mile to make sure everyone is taken care of to the fullest of our capabilities. It's hard sometimes, so they're lucky I love Disney.

  • Morning all!  I got way less done last night than intended, but didn't care, because instead of painting I drank wine and hung out with H.

We picked up 2 pieces of art we had stretched and framed (only 1 was framed) and man they look awesome.  I'm glad we ended up getting the huge one professionally stretched because I don't think I could have made it look that good.

Tonight I'm having a painting part with one of my girlfriends and tomorrow the inlaws are coming over.  We're finally starting this kitchen reno and the first step is to replace the window, which requires some load bearing wall work, so Derek's dad is coming to direct the work.

  • Wow mehg...  I really don't know how you (and people who do similar things) deal with stuff like that.  I mean I hate talking on the phone in general, like with people I know lol.  I would have had a really hard time not hanging up on someone like that.  Kudos to you.

    Sesh, that's awesome!  Congrats!

  • Raynes, I admire your artiness (is that a word?). The only art I have hanging in my apartment are two large collages I made a couple years ago and a Monet print my dad got me when I was 20 years old.

And yeah, Shay it's hard sometimes. But, on the flip side of the coin, it feels really good to help people. Last week, I discovered a guy who was getting overpaid ever since June of last year. I helped correct the error before our payroll processing went through for the 15th (so he wouldn't get overpaid today, adding to his indebtedness). I explained this all to him in detail and gave him option on how to repay his overpayment, and he actually left my office with a smile on his face. My CW looked at me and was like "I have no idea how you did that. You must be a fireball in bed." LOL

  • Ha, I used to have to talk to parents every day, but my duties have changed, so I rarely have contact with students or parents. I like people, but I can't stand parents of college kids.

Sesh, did you get this much publicity with your first book? Sounds like you are getting to be kinda a big deal ;)

Well, after a long day at work and a great afternoon and trip to Chuck E Cheese with my #1 girl (ex's daughter), and then an evening of girl talk at my friends house, I got home to the sweetest package at my door. Sparky is very grateful (as am I). If I hadn't been so damned tired, I would have cried. THen DH got home at about midnight, so I skipped bootcamp this morning and just woke up.

I'm getting a haircut this afternoon and then we have birthing class Saturday, I have a GTG with ANy amd Jenna on Sunday, and then I have to get ready to go to Boston next week. Its going to be hectic. Way hectic.

  • Mehg, I could never work in customer service. When I was at the zoo they lived by the "customer is always right" motto, especially with our paying members. Me, not so much. If they were doing something stupid, I'd tell them.

I had one guy try that line on me when his kid was doing something wrong (feeding the giraffe Skittles), "I pay good money to be a member here, and that gives us certain perks! Now get away from my son and let him do what he wants." So I calmly said, "I don't give a fvck what you pay as a member. Your perks do not include letting your kid feed our giraffe something that will likely kill her. Now get off my overlook."

Needless to say, I got a lot of complaints against me.

Yes and no. I did a lot in the beginning, but I was still in high school and didn't have a lot of time and was super shy. I did a couple signings and several interviews, but did more with the second book since I had more time. Then I had issues with the publishing company and backed off because I hated giving them my money from royalties. I'm focusing a lot more on this third one, now that I'm older, have more experience and contacts, and am better at talking to people.

Also, I can't get on FB at work but I saw your post notification in my email, and you are more than welcome.
  • mehg, if it's any consolation, we only have 1 piece of art up right now.  we own a few others, but nothings hung.  The walls just aren't ready!  Also, we only just started "collecting" this past fall.

  • Morning all.

I feel the pain of those who work/ed in customer service. That's part of what I do now, and it's not as bad here because most of the people I deal with are adult students. There have been a few over-the-top folks, but mostly sane. When I worked in a financial aid office, lord have mercy. I've never had so many people swear at me before. Those were the kind of calls that I would hold the phone away from my head and just wait for the screaming to stop. I also had people swear at me in the office, in person. That was holy unpleasant for everyone else in the office too.
  • My job now, I never have to personally deal with screaming customers. But there are times when we get escalated sites because customers are threatening to cancel and it's a riot to read the notes from the sales people. They usually read something like,

"Customer called, unhappy. Called company stupid. Said they'd be better off doing it themselves than wating 2 days. Expressed empathy. Then hung up." It's always "expressed empathy" rather than "told the customer he was an a-hole"

I think most of us can relate to this. Well, I definitely can anyway. I love my work and what I do (minus the oncall and paperwork), but higher ups definitely make it difficult at times. I know I am good at my job, but I get frustrated when people try to make unhelpful suggestions when I know what I am doing.

Happy Friday! I am so ready for the weekend. We are going to SIL's on Sunday for Palm Sunday dinner since she doesn't want to do Easter. She pissed me off because it was, "come over and bring something,' but then she told MIL specifically to tell me not to bring pasta. How friggin rude! You are going to tell me what to bring and what not to bring. Now I will bring a cheesy, dull salad and that is it! This isn't the first time she has done this. She tends to get offended for some reason when people compliment my cooking. WTF? Sorry for the Friday vent....back to TGIF!

  • I don't know if I could deal with parents.  Well, when I was a PO I had one younger guy who would have his parents call me for everything.  One day his dad started screaming at me on the phone and I informed him that me even talking to him at all was a courtesy and if he continued to disrespect me I'd be ending the conversation.  He called me a fuucking biitch so I hung up.  Then he called my supervisor, expecting to complain, I'm sure, and got chewed out by her.  It was awesome.

Then he threatened me IN COURT a couple weeks later.  He's lucky he didn't go to jail.

But anyway.  Good morning!  I'm seeing some old friends (from my old job) today, so I'm excited for that.  I really need to get my kitchen cleaned.  I work this weekend, boo, but I should be able to work on out escort cards at work.  Oh, and my rings are back!  I didn't have to hurt anyone, so that's good.

  • Good Morning ladies.

Today will be the suck. It's our CW's last day, so we are having a big tadoo for him this afternoon. Then most everyone is taking him out for drinks, I cant go :(

Megh- I feel ya! I have been in customer service for 28 years. Every job including this one now, is customer service. I've been cussed out many many times. But I've been lucky I had bossed that back me up, ALWAYS! And the motto in our industry changed years ago, because the customer is NOT always right.

I ran gas stations for 20 years (sound like fun?) I've been told to get a real job, that I get a raise ever time the gas goes up, etc...

Well tomorrow is spa day, I am so ready!

  • Morning y'all!  I'm so glad it's Friday.  H is heading out on Sunday to spend a week at the beach.  He's worked so much lately it'll be good for him to get away for a bit.

Shay, we got our patio furniture at Lowes last year and we really like it.  We got new cushions for it this year (I wanted a different color) but I think the furniture itself will last several more years.

I don't work with the general public, but sometimes I'm on the phone with "clients" (they're not really clients as they can't choose to have us not do the work, but that's the best word for it) that think we're wrong, or that we shouldn't be asking for things.  I have to tell them that yes, they really do have to give me all of that info, and no, they can't just wait and hope I'll forget I asked for it.
  • Good morning, ladies.
The year from hell continues.  I am so incredibly unhappy, it isn't even funny.  And poor DH has to put up with me.

  • Ugh, parent calls.  Enough said.

Shay, the florist is showing us something he designed for us in our consultation.  I think it will be a large vase with an orchid submerged in water with pink lights in it.  Then a bowl (?) of flowers and branches on the top.  I think the flowers might match my bouquet, so that will give me a good idea of whether I like it or not.  They're really affordable, though, and I really like the guy we're working with, so we probably will.  I think we might do a mix of centerpieces, though, because we found branches that look real, but have tiny LED fairy lights on them.
  • Morning!
