Re: LJ: Dowager's hump

  • Is she still readable?  I could go back to the drawing board.

  • There are exercises I learned from a physical therapist to prevent/help this exact thing!  It was after a car accident and he noticed I might develop this kind of hump if I didn't do anything about it.

The first one is to get on all fours (a tabletop in yoga), and then one at a time, move your arm extended all the way in a sweeping motion till it is perpendicular to the floor.  Watch it with your eyes and let your head and neck turn naturally to follow.  Then repeat on the other side.  I would start with about 10 on each side, and then add more gradually as the area strengthens.  It builds strength in the area to help stabilze everything.

The other move he told me about is what I call the 'superman'.  You lay down on your stomach with your arms extended on the floor in front of you like superman.  then, one at a time, lift one arm up and watch your hand as it goes up as far as you comfortably can.  Then repeat on the other side.  I would start with 10 on each side for this, too, just until you find what level you are on and how many you can do.

I know it's not a super cure-all, but I've found it helpful.  Plus, even if it doesn't get rid of the hump, it could stop it from getting worse.  At the very least it could give us all some extra upper back strength, and I think that's good no matter what!

    Hope it helps!
  • It's totally readable. To me anyways.
