What is the etiquette on giving used items?
My situation: Books are a huge thing in my family, every birthday and Christmas my mom (and now me too, since I'm old/have enough money to give gifts) get the gift reciever a book. For special occasions, they are always new books. But, I also tend to give books for occasions that don't usually require gifts. Like, a little get well basket with flowers and a book, or for a new mom, a favorite children's book and outfit for the baby plus a freezer ready casserole or gift certificate for delivery. For these situations I tend to give used books, especially if they are the type of book you read once then you're done with, not a book you cherish.
Is this okay? Should I always be giving new books?
I like giving (and the people I give books to like getting) books, and it has never mattered to me if it is new or used, but I don't want to do something that is not up to etiquette standard.
