Whatever the reason might be, you could just get them a more thoughtful gift rather than money gift. We had a hard time figuring out for our parents, so one thing (since it's right after Thanksgiving) they will be getting is an engraved ornament. It doesn't have to be anything nice, but you should still give them something thoughtful to say thanks for what they can do.

AND if they can't contribute financially there's a lot of other tasks, errands, day-of stuff you should ask them to do. If they aren't willing to help that way then it is a different story.

I'm experiencing the same the issues with fiancing for the wedding. My parents are in a much more stable financial situation that my fiance's family, and have been incredibly generous in offering to pay for our wedding, including the rehersal dinner. my fiance and i are currently saving for our honeymoon and plan to pay for that ourselves. however, his family is going to be my family. and the gift we give them will not be a thanks for their money, but a thanks for welcoming me into their family and a thanks for all the support they will offer over the years.
