Catholic Wedding Ceremony - music ideas?

Help! I am planning my Catholic wedding from a distance and am not able to meet with my ceremony musicians until just before the wedding. I need to decide on songs before then. Does anyone have suggestions on songs that can be played at a Catholic wedding from the prelude, to the processional, to the recessional?

Thank you!

  • Call the church you are getting married in.  They often require you to pick songs from an approved list.

  • how about
    1. Angels Watching – The O’Neill Brothers
    2. Ave Maria - Bach
    3. For the Beauty of the Earth – Conrad Kocher
    4. He Shall Feed His Flock - Handel
    5. Let There Be Peace On Earth - Jackson/Miller
    6. Lord of All Hopefulness - – Traditional
    7. Nearer My God to Thee - Mason Coming
    Soon!
    8. Now Thank We All Our God - Bach
    9. Wachet Auf - Bach
    I googled it...
  • Assuming that any non-secular music is okay (and it doesn't have to be strictly hymns) you have lots to choose from.
    - Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring
    - Water Music
    - Canon in D
    - Laudate Dominum

There is an excellent list of music for processional/ceremony/recessionals here:

  • Ditto Hoboken that your church may have regulations on which music you may select so you should check with them.  But assuming they are okay I love Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring (which I used when the grandmothers and mothers were escorted to their seats) and Canon in D (which I used for when the bridesmaids and matron of honor walked in).  Some Catholic churches will not allow you to use the Wedding March for when you walk down the aisle because it is secular.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • We are doing:

seating of parents/grandparents: Jesu joy of mans desiring
    bridal party: canon in d
    bride: trumpet voluntary

ditto other people...your church should send you a list of songs & a sheet to fill out for everything. We had to list all of our songs, readings, vow verses, prayers of the faithful, gifts, etc. Our church gave us a CD with song samples on it. You can also post on the catholic board to get other ideas for songs and readings. Your priest may also be able to give you some help with readings, etc.

  • The previous posters had some great ideas, and I am not sure if you are looking for instrumental music or music with vocals, but here are the songs that I am going with (my roommate is a very talented vocalist, so she is singing at the wedding and all of my songs, including the processional, have vocals):

Processional: Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
    Offertory: For all the Saints
Communion: Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
Presentation of Flowers to Mary: Ave Maria
Recessional: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

I have not settled on all of the prelude songs yet, but we are thinking: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty; O Love that Will Not Let Me Go; O God Beyond All Praising; Sing of Mary.

    Hope this helps!

This website is an excellent source of liturgically approved music......

My daughter processed to Canon in D.  Her responsorial psalm was, "I Have Loved You" by Joncas.  For the presentation of gifts, she used, "Wherever You Go" by Norbet.  "Make Me a Channel of your Peace/Temple was sung for the Sign of Peace, "Taste and See" was used during Communion, and "Ave Maria" was sung for the Presentation to Mary.
  • This is great! Thank you!
