AW: Got a job interview!

Just got called to schedule a job interview out in San Francisco! It's not until August 18th, which is perfect, since we're driving out there on August 12th and will probably get there on the 15th or 16th. I'm nervous, since the job is something I don't have a ton of experience in (residential treatment center, focusing on substance abuse, severe mental illness, and working with individuals with HIV/AIDS), but it sounds awesome. Oh, and it pays ;) Many internships for new therapists don't.

Any good interview tips or recommendations? I'm a wee bit nervous, even though it's so far away.

Re: AW: Got a job interview!

  • Relax! When you look comfortable they will have more confident that you are capable of doing the job well.
  • find a nice outfit to wear :)

    exciting!
  • Congratulations on the interview!  You're going to be great, just relax and stay calm.  You can do this!

  • Do a little research starting now. It never hurts to be able to talk about current ideas and research.

  • Good luck Poli! Just try and stay calm, and yes send a thank you card after the interview.
    Thats all I've got.

  • Dress professionally, take notes, ask at least 3 questions, send thank you note a few days afterward.

Also, I have 3 professional references listed on word document that I print and take with me, I give that right before I thank them at end of interview (this in case the application didn't ask for references).

  • Use TJs question!! And research that particular center, as well as the methods they use. Hopefully you can throw in your knowledge of the company during the interview.

  • Thanks, ladies! You guys are so helplful!

What was TJ's question again? I remember it being discussed, but I'm spacing.
  • It was along the lines of "what makes you think I wouldn't be the best fit for this job?"

  • Oh!  Also, good luck!  Wear a suit, make sure your hair is styled in a way that you won't be fussing with it, etc.

  • I think it was something like "Is there anything in this interview that would make you think that I'm not right for the position?"

  • Congratulations!  Smile, speak more slowly than you normally would, and make lots of eye contact.
  • I said "is there anything about this interview or resume that would make you think that I'm not the best candidate for this job?" It really blew the interviewer away.

  • Ooooooh that's a good one!

I definitely need to keep the "speaking slowly" in mind. I have a stutter that acts up pretty badly when I'm nervous, so breathing and speaking slowly are important. Maybe I'll do some yoga in the waiting room ;)
  • I'm realizing that's an extra-good question for the field that I'm in, since it's essential to get to the point and address stuff. I'm so going to steal that!
  • Congratulations!  That's great.  Ditto on the other ladies' advice.  All really great ideas.

  • That is awesome! Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
  • It'll be Indian summertime in SF, but mornings can often be overcast, especially if you're in the more western parts of the city.  Dress accordingly, maybe a scarf if there's a foggy morning.  Oh, and make sure you pack your interview outfit somewhere easily accessible.  It'd be horrible to have to dig through boxes to find it when you just moved!
  • Like Mica said, wearing layers of clothing is essential in SF in the summer. It can be cold and foggy in one neighborhood and hot and sunny in another.

I'm so excited for you! Good Luck!

  • Congratulations! Thats so exciting! You'll do great! And ditto pps on the company research, I always seem to get those kinds of questions in interviews.
  • Thanks, ladies! I really appreciate the tips, and I'll definitely dress in layers. I used to live in SF when I was little, but it's been a while, so it's a good reminder. And Mery, yes!!!
  • I have nothing but congrats!!
