Snarky Brides

Happy Birthday, Girl Scouts!

I hate that this post is going to get eaten faster than a Thin Mint, but I have to try to share the news anyway.

Today is the 100th birthday of Girl Scouting in the US.  On March 12, 1912 in Savannah GA, Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low held the first meeting.

I just went on a whole blog soapbox rant that I'll spare you from, but this is an organization that is so dear to me, that I wanted to at least share this much with you.

If you're interested: www.girlscouts.org is an obvious link to check out.

Also following the hashtag #GirlScouts100 today on Twitter will get you linked to all sorts of things happening all over the country.  Especially in NYC, where the current GSUSA headquarters is, and in Savannah, where GSUSA was founded.

Were (are) you a Scout?  Do you enjoy cookies?  Have a favorite Scout memory? A favorite Scout song?

  • Ah, yet another reason to like you pirategal, besides the obvious.

32 years in the Girl Scout program for me.  And yes it is a great day today for Girl Scouts.

In answer to your questions.  Yes, I am a Girl Scout, always will be a Girl Scout.  Love the cookies, tagalongs (chocolate/peanut butter) are my favorites.  Although I have  been known to make a super yummy thin mint pizza out of them.

Favorte Scout Memory, too many to count, although taking 60 girls to Savanah, GA from NEPA was a blast.  And then camping, camping, camping.

Favorite Song(s):  The silly song, Make New Friends, Going on a lion Hunt.

    Thanks for sharing.

<div>That's ridiculous.  Short of attacking another kid, that's just your leader being close minded. </div>
  • My original post got eaten, just as you said, quicker than a box of thin mints.

32 years and still going strong as a Girl Scout.

Favorite Memory:  Way to many to tell, Girls will be Girls and what fun!

Favorite Song:  The Silly Song, Going on a Lion Hunt, Make New Friends, again I could go on and on.

Thanks for sharing, I knew I liked you!
  • I joined Girl Guides part way through, did that, and then Pathfinders, and then jumped ship to the Boy Scouts side to join Ventures.

My years in Guiding/Scouting were some of the best, and I plan getting this LO involved (and probably getting involved myself too).

<div>I saw it for a minute hanging out all by itself in here!  I haven't had a chance yet to take girls to Savannah, taking 60 sounds fun!  I went with my troop when we were 11, and H and I are going in May for a visit.  </div>

<div>Whoo hoo!  I tried Ventures too, but it just wasn't my thing.  I found the different core themes between the boy and girl programs to be too different for me.  I totally understand why they are what they are, and the Venture program just wasn't what I wanted. </div>
  • I did Girl Scouts from age 7 - 10, until the meetings conflicted with my CCD classes and my parents made me drop (religion trumped GS, apparently).  My mom was our troop leader for most of it, and she was a pretty awesome one.  My favorite memories involve the only overnight jamboree that I went to, making those little bead things with safety pins (what the hell were they called?) to give to new friends at jamborees, and the one time that we got our cooking badges by making fruit turnovers to take camping.  We made them ahead of time, then wrapped them in foil and put them by the campfire in the morning to heat up and make.  They were so good.

  • Yay girl scouts!

My mom was a troop leader but she was more active in boy scouts than girl scouts.  I was in a Venture crew when I was older but I never got to do girl scouts.

My boss is a troop leader.  I might be helping her with a sewing class for her girls.

<div>That'll be fun!  I need to recruit your expertise.  I have VERY basic sewing machine knowledge (mostly what I learned in Scouts, actually) but my mom was a quilter and I have most of her machines.  I'd like to know how to use them well enough to feel like I can sew something without help.  </div>
  • awww. :)

I was in GS from K-5th grade? I sold the most cookies every year. woop woop.

We also did the overnight camp in the summer, which was awesome. And making pizza pot pie things over the campfire.
  • I got kicked out of gs because I refused to sell cookies the year they had glass in them. (dating myself-- it was like 1985)

I don't remember what it was, but I did not use them to attack anyone. Mrs. Andrusco just sucked as a leader.

That being said, I still like me some Girl Scout cookies.

  • I was never in Scouts but I love me some Treefoils/Shortbread depending on the area.

I did teach a Girl Scout troop how to build a bird house at Home Depot once. That was a lot of fun.
  • Yay!  Happy 100th GS!

I was a girl scout from 1st-4th grade if I remember correctly.  I remember selling M&Ms door to door- did anyone else do that?  Our next door neighbor was a really sweet older lady and she bought some from me but when she paid, she accidentally included a $20 bill with the $5.  I didn't notice until I got home so I went back across the street and gave her the $20 back and a few hours later she brought me flowers as appreciation.

I also remember summer camp.  It was the first time I spent a week away from my parents and it was awesome!  My favorite part was horseback riding and canoeing in the lake all day.  Fun stuff.

Sometimes I really wish I had stayed in GS.  I don't remember why I stopped going.  I think I didn't like how cliquey my troop was.  Most of them knew each other from school but I was homeschooled so I, as well as a few other girls who went to private school, were kind of left out of stuff sometimes.

  • I did Brownies for a year when we lived in Rochester with my best friend.  Then we moved away to Iowa and I didn't pick it up again.

H is an Eagle Scout and is slightly obsessed with the Boy Scout organization.  He buys patches and stuff off e-bay all the time and has this ridiculous looking Boy Scout belt buckle that he loves. He's already making plans for our hypothetical future children to be involved in Boy/Girl Scouts and talking about joining something called the Order of the Arrow. It's kinda cute.

  • I was never actually a girl member, but I've been a Brownie leader for the last 10 years. It's been hilarious...I love those kids. I fully plan to have LO be involved in Guiding/Scouts in the future.

For fun, here's a craft one of the girls made for me for my desk. I'm "Brown Owl" so I got one:

  • Well, I posted but it got eaten.  It was kind of long anyway.

Long story short, I loved GS and was a scout from 1st-4th grade.  Things I remember the most were M&M sales door to door and summer camp.

I still wish sometimes that I had stayed in but left because my troop was pretty cliquey.  They all knew each other from the public school and since I was homeschooled, myself and a couple other girls who went to the private school, were kind of left out of stuff.
  • Also Pirate, have you seen all of the Boy/Girl Scout stuff at the NC History Museum? I don't know if it's a permanent exhibit or just a temporary one, but it's kind of cool. We went a couple of weeks ago because H wanted to see the Eagle Scout stuff.

  • I spent one year as a girl scout.  I had just moved to the suburbs, and it seemed like the "thing" to do.  It was boring (probably because of our troup leader rather than the organization), so I dropped out as soon as the school year ended.

<div>It's temporary, partially because of the 100th this year.  I walk by that museum almost 10 times a week, but I haven't gone yet.  </div>
  • I was in from Brownies until 5th grade or so.  My mom was a cook at a camp every summer so I got to go as a "staff brat" (since I wasn't a Scout at that point).  Favorite memory of those summers were midnight pantry raids - do you have any idea how many boxes of GS cookies are kept for a GS camp?  :)

And now I have Boom Chicka Boom stuck in my head...

Love hearing all of your GS stories.

My leader in Brownies and my daughter's leader in Brownies was actually the same woman.  She was amazing.

My daughter also joined Venture Crew (division of Boy Scouts) when she got older and really loved the high adventure end of things.  She got me to go caving with her, boy was that an experience.

My Son is an Eagle Scout too.  Yes, I realize I probably am a total Scout Geek, but hey, it is a great program if you have the right people involved.

And thanks Girlie, now Boom Chicka Boom is going through my head!
  • Half of my posts in this thread are going missing, I'm not ignoring anyone's story, I promise. (I wonder if this will make it)

I was a brownie, then stopped going. I joined again when I was in high school, since my best friend at the time was doing it. We were in her moms troop, and it was actually pretty fun. I bridged to adult, and got my little rainbow pin.

I love cookies. Thin Mints and Thanks A Lots (I miss when they were animal trasures!).

ETA: Favorite song, Baby Bumble Bee, Little Red Wagon, Hermie the Worm.

  • Did anyone else sing Little Bar of Soap?  Makes me laugh at how inappropriate it is and I'm betting it's not a camp standard anymore.
    image
  • I remember that song! We used to sing it at camp.
