br korean birthday complaint

note to self: never call mother ever again.  ever ever ever again.

baby mo's first birthday is coming up.  i called my parents last night to talk about plans.  mom asked about food and decorations.  and then she asked me if there would be dol go ims there, and i said no.  and then she made sad, "ohh, hmoooooooo" sounds and general korean tsk tsking.

wtf is a dol go im, you ask?  they're these little towers that are decorations for a child's first birthday.  they're covered in candy or beans or candy beans, and they make little shapes and patterns, or spell out the kid's name or zodiac character.  because they make these shapes, they are hand made -- and EXTREMELY labor-intensive.  oh, and they have to be in odd numbers, but you can't make just one because then you look like a giant slacker.

i now have to make three of these flerking things.  i'm already compromising by making them oatmeal-can size (people have used concrete pouring tubes) and covering them in very large candies.  i wish i could use gummy worms or something, but they really should be a round candy, so i'm going to use gumdrops.

yay, labor day weekend of me burning myself with a hot glue gun.

    I love this whole thread.

I assume there is a reason the candies have to be round.  Necco wafers are pretty big you know.

    I want to help!

This sounds like the perfect project to drop in on a friend and help with while watching hoarders and then leave as soon as the show is ending and their kid starts crying and then they can finish it at 3am while waiting for the birthday cake to cool.

Oh, and then I would show up at the party and take 60% of the credit when really...I glued on something like four pieces.

What is baby's second birthday version of these? Are you going to have to make things for every birthday? Can these things be purchased?

no, THANK THE LORD IN HEAVEN there isn't a second birthday version of these.  it's for first birthdays and sixtieth birthdays.

they can't be purchased because they're personalized but you can rent generic ones.  the generic ones look pretty weird and waxy, though.  and i would get another round of korean tsk tsking and sighing.

    Ha @ Zilla's Oprah reference.

H, you know I love the Asians. I can't wait to see Baby Mo at his par-tay. I would crash it if I could.

no.  my mom asked, and i declined.

btw -- A BURBERRY DRESS FOR A ONE YEAR OLD.  this is one of those "no 14yo boy should have a $95 shirt unless he's on stage with his four brothers."

But, if you hot glue the candy, how do you eat it later?! This is disturbing me.

If your mom wants them so badly, why can't SHE make them?

I guess there's some Asian rule about that, like it's bad luck unless the mom does it?  I hope mr. mo is warming up his white-ass glue gun, too.

One and six? That is weird to me because six is an even number and those are supposed be in odd number?

Those? Look fvcking tedious. And like you need tiny Asian hands to make 'em. My fat fingers would be making a hot mess and nothing else.

They are cute, but do look like a lot of work.
