Re: I am bored.

• The vampire diaries books are NOTHING like the show. The show is much better written. They were ok. Very easy reads.

I wouldnt but them full price or anything. Its worth it if you can find them at a used bookstore or something, but not worth the 20 bucks or so I paid for hardcovers.

• Good to know, thanks! I'll probably skip them.

• I liked L.J. Smith as a teen and there are still some trilogies/series that I thought were great concepts, but her writing is pretty simplistic. I think the Vampire Diaries were the worst of all, though.

• Put it this way. In the books Elena is blonde, Bonnie is a red-headed Irish girl, Caroline is poorly written, there are ridiculous plot lines that involve Elena reaching a higher level of existence, Jeremy does not exist(she has a 5 year old sister instead), and Aunt Jenna is on old lady.

Something kcullen would deem appropriate for adults.

And Judy Blume. Apparently.

I read A Wrinkle in Time for the first time in the fourth or fifth grade, and it remains one of my favorite books of all time.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: I am bored. : Have you read the rest of the quartet? A Wrinkle is my favourite of the 4, but they are all well written. I bought them as a set when I was 22. One whole shelf on our bookshelf is YA (or even younger) literature. I love to pull them out and read them again from time to time. I recently just read for the first time a Captain Underpants book- certainly not a classic, but I'm all for any book that will get a kid (or anyone!) to read. In University, I used to read something like The Golden Compass on weekends just to clear my head out of Foucault or Aboriginal History. Who cares what you are reading as an adult as long as you are reading?

Agreed!

I only read Wrinkle and A Wind at the Door (In the Door?). Strangely, I didn't get into The Golden Compass at all.

I love anything by Edward Bloor.
• I love the Vampire Diaries show, but good to know the books aren't that great.

blue- I loved Eragon as well.

Yes! I loved them all, especially A Wrinkle In Time and A Wind in the Door. I really felt like those books made me think about the world in a whole new way. The riddle of explaining light and color to a species that can't see is mind-boggling to a 10 year-old. (Arguably, to a 29 year-old too!)

• I, for one, was not traumatized by the Narnia series the first time I read it, when I was 11. Perhaps because of the religious overtones at the end, actually. Last Battle sort of hits you over the head with that whole Book of Revelations parallel. But then, silly me, I think fantasy is just that! I also think there were some parts that were scarier in the Golden Compass series than anything CS Lewis wrote.

• I didn't catch the religious aspects of Narnia the first time I read the series, but I am not very knowledgeable on religion so that's not surprising. But The Golden Compass was definitely worse in terms of being traumatic. I mean, a kid's fingers get cut off. And souls are separated from bodies. That's scary stuff for kids.

I did a lecture on Pullman versus Lewis for a lit class once and got into a very heated debate with a guy who thought Pullman was the closest thing to God, so that issue is one that definitely gets me worked up.
• Did you guys switch from The Girl Who Played With Fire to Dragon Tattoo? Because I just got GWPWF from my school library after convincing the librarian to go out and buy it so not cool!!

I tend to gravitate towards sci fi when I read for pleasure. It's definitely very involved sci fi though, and the kind you can read over and over again because every time you catch some detail that you didn't get the first time.

How judgemental, kcullen. Book snobs annoy the hell out of me.

Let's see - I've got a memoir written by two Vietnam War POWs, the Potter series, Kellerman , Deaver, annotated Alice in Wonderland, Dracula, and Winnie the Pooh, King, Koontz, Dostoyevsky (which I dislike), Dickens, Nancy Drew, an assortment of true crime, Frankenstein, Dracula (un-annotated), Gone With the Wind, all of Dan Brown's books, two Circelli novels, Lee Child, Vince Flynn....

This could go on all night. Enjoyment of YA literature doesn't indicate reading level, IQ, maturity, or anything, other than possibly someone who is willing to try something beyond his or her realm of "supposed-to" read. Ridiculous. Same as saying a 5th grader can't read Dickens.

• Will do :) I should send you my file with all my random bits and pieces too.

Today was blah. Stuffy nose, headache, worrying about Ewok, blah.

• Ooh, yes. I'd love to read/know more. And it might help with my ideas for the hallway thing.

Also, I love the name Ewok.

• Heh, heh, Sesh :).

I think that might classify you as a child, Kim. It's way below your watching comprehension level. Better go for a foreign film. Preferably one with subtitles.
Of course, I'd say have at it. I happen to be watching the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre currently, and I've seen Busta Rhymes in Halloween Resurrection tonight as well. I'm certainly not highbrow in my movie tastes.

Sesh/Katie, if we'd have known the kind of range of noises (what a poorly constructed sentence) Max would be capable of making, he would've been named Wookie. There are times when he can make sounds just like Chewbacca, especially the one he makes when they're lowering Han Solo into the deep freeze thing. I about wet my pants laughing the first time he did it. It's now become "wookieing" when he does it.

1) Ewok's twin brother was named Wookie

2) Katie does that too!! She starts wookieing when she gets really excited and her whole head shakes. I can't believe another dog does that too! I swear Max is her soul mate.
