No, I'm in one that's pretty similar to PISD (that makes me laugh!).  I guess I'm surprised that they were going to let one parent dictate their textbook choices.  It's not like the nude statues were having sexy time or anything.

So in this conference, he waves it in my face and asks me why I'm letting his son handle live HIV. Yay parents.

    Dear my secret knottie person,

Your ornament(s) will be in the mail in about 30 minutes or whenever I decide to get off my lazy arse to get to the post office. I'm hungry so it will probably be soon. Anyways, sorry they are late. Just know that I looked at a BILLION places to find the perfect ornament that I had in my head. I didn't find it. So you have a couple random ones. I still hope that you like them.

Dear people who don't understand why some people get upset about body scanners,

I see your points--some compromises have to be made in order to keep air travel safe.  People who oppose body scanners have all different reasons for opposing them, but here are a few things to consider.

For sexual trauma survivors, the process of going through body scanners can be incredibly traumatizing and/or retraumatizing.  It's probably true that for most people with PTSD the body scanners would be less traumatic than a pat down, but both can feel violative and the body scanners increase the likelihood that survivors are going to have to undergo one or the other.

One thing with the pat downs though is that you have more control over the situation in some ways because you know who is doing the pat down, you can typically be assured that you're being screened by someone of the same gender, and no one is creating a potentially permanent image of what you look like under your clothes.  For many people having someone behind a screen looking under your clothes without knowing or having control over who is doing the viewing can feel extremely violating.  For people who have been victimized through child pornography or who have been stalked or videotaped without their consent, I can see how having someone create an image of your body like that could be extremely upsetting. There is also a lot of potential for misuse of the images given that there are creeps everywhere, and creeps tend to seek out jobs that give them access to people's bodies and/or images of people's bodies.

It's also worth keeping in mind that body scanners impact different people differently.  Body scanners put people who are transgender in danger of having their trans status outted.  Being outted as trans is incredibly dangerous given the amount of abuse and violence trans people are subjected to just for being trans, both by random strangers, people they know, and authorities including security officers and TSA agents.  Typically, trans people already have an incredibly difficult time traveling because there are a lot of bureaucratic hurdles and obstacles to getting the gender on all of one's identifications to match up.

There are also issues that arise with body scanners for people with disabillities as certain disabilities which would otherwise be invisible can be exposed when one goes through a body scanner.  Some people view this as a violation of medical privacy.

Again, I realize that there is no way to keep airports and flights safe without making some compromises.  And I get that people can choose other ways to travel, but given how many factors limit one's choices about travel, I'm not sure how useful it is to say that flying is a choice.  I think it's important to remember that there are some groups of people who have less choices about how they travel, who are more heavily scrutinized by airport security, and who have less options when it comes to travel.  So while it's great that going through a body scanner has a minimal impact on you and that you don't mind, there is a lot of privilege behind the ability to make that statement and behind the ability to make choices about how you travel.

This is one reason why my DH is so annoyed at the screening process and would much prefer the pat down.  He also said last night that when we have kids, the screening process would be a determining factor when flying.

    nickandmerritt -

Your points are certainly valid and not ones that I hadn't considered in forming my opinion, but going through a scanner (or having a pat down) is a mandatory safety  procedure regardless of how anyone feels about it.

Plus, I've seen the scans and not only are there no names associated with them, but the individual is not identifable from the scan even if someone somehow snapped a copy of it.

I'm in favor of safety...and a scan is the least intrusive way to ensure it.

Yeah I respect your position, it's pretty much no win.  I just think it's important to keep in mind that a lot of security measures, body scanners included, protect people at the cost of endangering and increasing surveillance of already marginalized groups.  So in general these kinds of measures end up primarily protecting white, cisgender, able-bodied men more than anyone else.

ETA: And that's the last I'll say about it, I don't want to hijack OL!

I won't drag on either..but yes, that part is unfortunate.   I'd like to think they select people at complete random, but I'm sure that is not the case.
