Grocery Store Cake (WR)

Did any of you just order your cake from the grocery store? If yes, how was it? I would imagine it would probably be cheaper than going through a free standing bakery, but if it's gross, what's the point?

It looks al ittle old fashined to me, but not bad. And if it tastes good, then its probably a good value.

Why don't you try another ckae from the same grocery store? That would give you a good idea of the quality they are capable of producing.

it's something I am considering doing--my coordinator recommended a certain store where I live, as well as several folks by word of mouth. I need to taste the different flavors the store has to make sure it will at least taste good. and they were willing to design the cake how I want (within reason). considering that all I want is white buttercream icing, 3 tiers and a ribbon around the bottom of each tier, I would hope that grocery store can pull that off.

Sounds like a fine idea to me. I generally think those fancy cakes are a waste of money.

Sarah, me too. Rick and I aren't huge cake fans either, so it's hard to imagine spending a ton on something that realistically we'll take 2-3 bites of. I still want it to be pretty though

for a cake as simple as what we want, I feel that it is ridic to pay $2.50+ per teeny slice of cake. my cake will cost like $20 to make.

Personally, I think grocery store cake is delicious. A cake can be beatiful to look at, but if the taste is off, what's the point?

i don't like grocery store cakes around here so i wouldn't. i don't even buy birthday cakes from our grocery stores.

We had a grocery store cake. It was VERY yummy, however, while it was supposed to resemble the picture you had it was poorly done, and looked much smaller in person. We ordered a sheet cake to go along with it. Definitely not a dream cake, but it served its purpose.

Jill, if you don't like cake, how about doing cupcakes? My cupcakes are going to be in lots of yummy flavors, not necessarily ones you can do with a wedding cake (check my bio for flavors). We're doing a small two tier cake for cutting, but the cupcakes are the main event.

I've never had Schnucks cakes, but the groom's cake is from Kroger and they have awesome cakes.

We were going to go with Publix (who has delicious cakes btw), but they ended up being the exact same price as a free-standing bakery. The cake was bigger, but I decided to go with the bakery instead to make sure I got the design I wanted.

My soon to be step-daughter and her husband used Publix, and it was delicious. So since we're having such a small wedding that's who we're going with, we don't have a Publix in Ohio we have Kroger, which I agree has delicious cakes.And in Cleveland we have Heinens.We just bought a birthday cake from them for the first time and it was the best cake I've ever had, wish we could get our cake there.

Personally I think those expensive aren't worth it, if it taste good buy it.

No Publix around my hometown. Just Dierbergs, Schnucks, and Sam's Club.

Whit, that's probably what we'll end up doing (but cupcakes are still cake!)

In general, I don't think there's anything wrong with going with a grocery store cake. If it's good - who cares where it came from.

Navy, I was considering Publix as well. I get all my cakes from them. That's interesting that it's about the same amount. I'll have to research a bit more before committing either way.

I love cake!

We did a tasting at our local grocery (and Walmart since they had samples at a bridal show) and were quite impressed. Not the best cake in the world but certainly yummy. We ended up going with the pastry chef from one of our local high-end restaurants because I was so picky about it being the best cake ever. It still wasn't a bad price at $2.50 a slice and i think it turned out pretty. Cupcakes are always nice when it gives your guests flavor choices.

We did table cakes. The grocery store was actually more expensive. And they weren't all decorated and pretty like the bakery. I guess it just depends.

I got mine from Martin's Grocery. It was 2 tiered white cake with buttercream. More than enough to serve 70 people and only $70. They had a bunch of different options and let you customize it (to a point) which was nice. Everyone talked about how yummy it was and how nice it looked.

I think it just depends on how important the cake it to you. We had one as extras (also made cupcakes) but it turned into a big hit. If I had my heart set on "the cake" I may have gone a different route.
