Rec your face wash, moisturizer, or facial care products

So, my skin is finally ready to leave puberty and the teenager facewashes I've been using are drying the hell out of my face. I used to have really problematic skin that was like an oil slick all the time, but now I'm like a real adult and all, it's not as oily and my break outs are fewer and far between.

I've been using Neutrogena products for the last two years, the scrubs in particular. I like how they get the dead skin off. My skin feels really tight and dry for a couple hours after I use it, and I really don't like that. I wash my face three times a day, once in the morning, once before working out (with an all natural make up remover/cleanser) and then after I work out in the evening.

I tend to break out on my jaw line and my cheeks more than anywhere else and I'm constantly pimply there. I also use my facewash on my chest as it is constantly broken out. I don't really know what to do to clear up my skin and make it look healthier and less like a 14 yr old. Suggestions?

Re: Rec your face wash, moisturizer, or facial care products

  • I use St. Ives Apricot Scrub cause it makes me feel ancient.
The best results I've seen are when I used the three step AcneFree product or the three step Clinque face routine when I was making money and not paying bills.
  • I've used the St Ives Apricot Scrub before too, and it really really really really screwed up my face. It was so drying it was painful all day long. I loved the way it made my face feel as I was washing and it smells so yummy!

The AcneFree thing, is that like ProActive? That stuff also screwed with my face. It was always on fire. And I'm lazy and won't use all three steps all the time.

I guess I should have mentioned I have sensitive skin.

  • Great post Audrew - I'm looking forward to seeing these recommendations too. I have exactly the same problems as you, it seems. I regularly break out around my jawline area and occasionally on my chest. Never that badly (maybe two ugly zits at a time, at most), but even when I'm not breaking out, I just never think my skin looks good without makeup. I think I need to exoliate and moisturize more, but I'm worried about moisturizing the areas that often break out.

  • Yeaa the last time I tried to use just the AcneFree facewash by itself my skin was SO itchy. I figured it was expired or my skin was not used to it anymore. But I do remember having glorious face skin when I was into the routine of three steps. Now my face is lucky to get rubbed with that St. Ives shtuff for a full 20 seconds (....haaaappy birthday dear so-n-soooo, happy birthday to you.)

At night I use the cetaphyl acne wash and target's timeless sensitive moisterizer. 2 times a week I use a clean and clear acne wash scrub with the acne wash in the morning to exfoliate.

  • I use the Clinique three step program as well. It's really great for making your face feel clean without overdrying. If that's too pricy, I like the Olay mild face wash also.

You may want to think about only washing your face twice a day with actual face wash, and just using make-up remover before the gym. I've heard that anything more than twice a day will overdry your skin, and prompt your body into making more oil, therefore making your face greasy.

Also, it helped me a lot to be mindful of how much I'm touching my face/resting it on my hands. I used to get horrible breakouts on my cheekbones, and I realized it was because I always rested my face up against the heel of my hand there. Also, cleaning off your phone! There are all kinds of nasty bacteria on it that can lead to zits along your chin/side of your mouth.

  • Desert recommended Paula's Choice products and I finally tried them.  They are by far the best products I've ever used.  Here are links to the base products I currently use:

    https://www.paulaschoice.com/product/skin-balancing-oil-reducing-cleanser/cleansers-makeup-remover

    http://www.paulaschoice.com/product/skin-balancing-pore-reducing-toner

    http://www.paulaschoice.com/product/resist-anti-aging-clear-skin-hydrator

These all work for my acne prone/combination skin.

Also, they have free shipping on any order right now and their return policy is great (you can try anything for 60 days and return it if you don't like it for a full refund).

  • Oh, and for exfoliation, I use this every couple of days:

    http://www.paulaschoice.com/product/skin-perfecting-eight-percent-aha-gel/bha-aha-exfoliants

I had cystic acne as well before using these.  My skin is the best it's ever been since I started getting acne in high school.

  • When I first switched over from these years I too used Clinique...it didn't dry my skin out at all.  Within a few years after that (maybe 2) I switched to Este Lauder for about a year before I switched again to Lancome.  I love Lancome but supplement that with Perricone MD and Ole Henriksen (though their facial wipes are no good for me...they make me break out) because I'm obsessed with anti-aging products...I doubt you have to worry about this ANY time soon.  :)

Have you considered getting one of those cleanser systems?  Not Clarisonic (crazy expensive) but something similar?  I think I got one over the counter at the grocery store with Oil of Olay products and it really helped get my skin more clean...I rarely, rarely break out since I started using it (though expect your skin to break out more when you first start using it becuase you are irritating the skin more than you would with a normal soapy hand face wash).
  • I started using the tea tree oil line from The Body Shop in the spring, and I love it. I use the face wash, toner, and lotion. It helps with pimples but isn't drying. I still use extra moisturizer (Spectro for combination skin) on a few really dry spots and benzoyl peroxide gel on my nose (the oilest part of my face) as well.

To exfoliate, I use something by Clean & Clear. It's just a basic exfoliant - there's no acne medicine or moisturizer or anything in it, which works for me since I use other face wash.

  • Also, do you have a Sephora nearby you?  They are expensive but sometimes you can go in and ask for samples to give a few things a "try".  Even when they don't have set sample packets, they will sometimes make samples for you with little empty tubes.

I heart Sephora big time...my wallet does not.
  • I used the acnefree thing as well (all the steps). It REALLY helped to clear up my skin. Then I switched to a different birth control that was supposed to help with acne, and other than a few pimples once in a while, my face is miraculously healed. I really liked the acnefree system though.

I've been using Cetaphil gentle cleanser for years. I had adult acne along the jawline its quite commonand had prescription medication because salicylic acid doesn't work on me and I'm allergic to benzoyl peroxide. However, if you can stand benzoyl peroxide, it's very effective. The 2 percent solution is effective with less irritation than 10 percent. Neutrogena makes some, or you can get a big bottle from acne.org for much less money. Edit: damn you mobile site and your lack of punctuation!
  • I use the walnut and wood apple exfoliant (http://www.himalayausa.com/Botanique/skincare/exfoliating-walnut-n-wood-apple-scrub.htm) and the hydrating face wash (http://www.himalayausa.com/Botanique/skincare/hydrating-face-wash.htm) by Himalaya. If I need it, I'll roll on some pure vitamin E oil for extra moisture.

I have really sensitive skin, so I have to be careful :|.

  • I'm stil perfecting my skin care regimen, too, but there are a couple products I'm crazy about:

    1.  Proactiv pore refining mask.  The full Proactiv regimen is probably too intense for your needs, but the refining mask is amazing for clearing up occasional breakouts.

    2.  Garnier Moisture Rescue Gel.  It's a moisturizer, but it's light and clean-feeling.  I don't have a lot of luck with Garnier products in general, but this stuff rules.  It also smells good, which isn't necessary but it's a nice bonus.

They really are awesome.  They easily compare to more expensive products.  Some of their stuff can get pricey, but for the most part, it's moderately priced.

Let me know if you like what you order!

  • I was going to recommend cetaphil as well. I'm lucky in that I don't break out much but I am always really red and it definitely calms my skin and makes it softer. Or aveno... I love them.
  • I found most of the Paula's Choice stuff too harsh, even the sensitive skin line.  I think the toners/exfoliator/whatever else regimen was just too much, so I switched to a gentle cleanser and added in products when needed.  I have a ridiculous skin care routine, it seems.

    My regimen:

AM - Wash lightly with Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser - face, neck, upper back, back of arms
-If I'm showering, follow with benzoyl peroxide wash (I used Clean & Clear 5% up until yesterday when I had to buy another brand - so now it's a 3.5% by Neutrogena - I feel better about using a lower dose).  Don't use it daily, don't leave it on for the full recommended time.
-Put on mixture of 5% benzoyl peroxide** (http://www.paulaschoice.com/product/clear-extra-strength-daily-skin-clearing-treatment/acne-treatment-clear-skin) and moisturizing gel (http://www.paulaschoice.com/product/skin-balancing-invisible-finish-moisture-gel/moisturizers) - both by Paula's choice.  Put on face, chest, upper back, and arms if I'm not concerned about bleaching.  Avoid neck.  Let it soak in while I lotion the rest of my body (Cetaphil)
-Lotion above areas + neck with mixture of moisturizing gel and Clean & Clear Dual Action lotion with salicylic acid.  Usually just enough to keep away any dry spots.  In the winter, I'll probably add a little of my regular lotion into the mix, also.  I have the WORST combination skin, so I have to be really careful about keeping certain places moisturized, or it gets flakey.

Night - Same as above but I don't wash with benzoyl peroxide.

**They also offer a 2.5% kind, which I think I will get when mine runs out.  Then I won't have to dilute it like I do now.

I (eek) don't use a sunscreen - although my mineral powder I use daily has it - so I will avoid benzoyl peroxide when I'm spending time in the sun, especially if there is no makeup involved.

BP bleaches, badly.  Use white towels to dry your face and invest in white pillow cases.  I've ruined so many hand towels, regular towels, and my pillow cases.  Oops.  It doesn't do anything to my hair, though.  I haven't noticed anything on my clothes, but you should know that could get bleached too.  It can also be used as a spot treatment, but once I started putting it everywhere, my skin has improved so much, especially my chest and back which break out a lot because of my hair.

At night, I wash using my Clarisonic which exfoliates and gets off ALL of my makeup. I really, really, REALLY recommend it. They're pretty pricey but maybe you could treat yourself or ask for it as a gift, maybe.

I'm glad there's someone else out there who appreciates her products as much as I do!  I 2nd the Clarisonic, but I don't use mine daily (more like once a week).

I forgot to say that I haven't had ANY cycstic acne since I started using these products, which is the first time in my life I can say that.

As far as benzoyl peroxide, I know it works for Everdeen, but be careful using it!  It literally burned my skin the last time I tried it.  I can't even use it as a spot treatment.  Salycic acid products work much better for my skin.

  • I used Clinique for years, but my face started spazzing out after I went off birth control, right around this time last year. I got a Clarisonic (from Liv!!) and it has changed my life forever. It's seriously the best thing ever.

Also, thanks to Liv, I found Ole Henrickson, and my skin has never ever been better. I also have really sensitive, dry skin, and Ole pretty much changed my life.

    I use (all clicky):
