I thought this too.
• I think state smoking bans are an infringement on business owners' liberties. You should be able to engage in whatever legal activity you choose inside your own establishment. If people don't like it, they'll complain or go elsewhere. There are plenty of bars who ban smoking by choice, regardless of the state law. The free market takes care of it without sticking the government in errybody's business.

Huh...you're right.
• I think you make an excellent point, LC.

But selfishly, I love smoking bans.
• Yuengling is not the greatest beer on earth, but I like it (especially the Black and Tan) way more than I like anything from Bud, Miller or Coors.

Growing up, one of my dad's friends was a part-owner of Great Lakes. The fridge was always stocked. I'm partial to Burning River.
• i get that LC, but around here nobody banned it themselves, because no one wanted to lose the smoker's business.  I live in a pretty tiny place, so there weren't many options as to where to go.  Since everyone had to ban it no one really lost any business because smokers aren't just going to completely quit going out, and my lungs really appreciate it.

I agree, and Im not a daily smoker. There are actually a few bars here in CA that you *can* smoke in. They are total dives, but hey you take what you can get.

<div>Well Congress (and the President I'm guessing) make their own rules about this stuff. Technically I could be fired because I'm a woman. Anti-discrimination laws don't apply to Congress. I never <em>would</em> be fired for being a woman, but it is totally legal. Anyway, the Speaker's lounge in the Capitol was a smoking allowed room until Nancy Pelosi was speaker and everyone though Boehner would change it back to allow smoking and it was a big deal that he didn't because he smokes like a chimney. </div><div>

• So two seconds ago, page 9 was gone and now it's back to page 10.
• You can't smoke in my city, but you can in some near me. I like the option, and I agree with LC.

Eye to eye. But I also think abortion would be legal, the death penalty should be abolished, and most non-violent crimes shouldn't receive prison sentences.

CRFB, I can't find your post but I almost guarantee you Congress wrote an exception for themselves into that law.

ETA: and now I see that was an executive order. But still, I'm sure Obama can go against that if he wants, you know. And I know for a fact people smoked inside the capitol building up until 2006.
LC, you're absolutely right.  I didn't agree with it when I smoked, and I don't agree with it now that I don't smoke.  Don't want to tend bar at a corner joint where they allow smoking?  Go work at a restaurant or chain that doesn't allow it.
Posted by EaglesBride2012
On that note, that is why I have been reluctant to go out in Kentucky since the smoking ban in Ohio.
• Erin, how did you know know that? I most definitely knew Obama Smokes...it was a big ole thing. Maybe I know too much random stuff. that's probably it Cool

Considering it's been talked about a lot in the media for the past 2-3 years, I'm surprised :)
• Well, liking or appreciating a ban doesn't make it the right thing to do. Catering to one group over another at the expense of business owners' personal liberties isn't ever going to be ok with me.

</div><div>Absolutely! I don't think it's right to put a business man who embezzled $1,000,000,000 in the same prison as someone who molested a child. If you're asking what I think the punishment should be, I don't know.

</div>
• Well I watch the Nightly News with Brian Williams (my homeboy) and they talk about it every once in awhile.

But I've been accused of sounding like a know-it-all lately, so there's that.
• I'm curious, those of you who are against smoking bans, do you think it's okay when hospitals ban smoking? I've always found it ironic to see patients with oxygen tanks smoking outside hospitals and our hospital just banned all smoking at the start of the year.

</div><div>I do think it's ok for a hospital to ban smoking. There are patients who are not necessarily choosing to be in the hospital, but have to be there. Their safety shouldn't be in danger when they cannot or do not have the choice of leaving the hospital.

• Chrissy, I just added an ETA to my post. But trust me, the laws of the land do not always extend to DC Wink
• LC - you say civil liberties, and you make me start thinking.  If it were up to individual businesses, do you think that they would all stay smoking or all change?  What is the percentage of population the does smoke?  How many of their clients would they be alienating either way?  How are smoking bans put into place?  Vote of the people or vote by the representatives of the people?

Just thinking about ways to make this more fair but satisfy everyone (which is impossible).

<div>I think the only "fair" thing is to allow individual businesses to decide. I think a lot of businesses would keep the smoking bans, but entertainment type businesses would allow smoking. It would probably depend on the city, state, culture though as well.</div>
• Selfishly, I like smoking bans since I don't smoke.  From a public health standpoint, I like smoking bans.  But I get that banning smoking can been seen as a violation of personal rights.
