First meltdown.....

I went to David's today for my first alterations appointment. First off, let me say that I ordered their smallest size (0P) and it was still way too big. I called about a month ago and they told me it would be about $100 for the dress to be fixed.

I got all pinned and loved my dress until the seamstress came back in. She told me the total. $210. I got all flushed (as I was inwardly panicking) and she left. My MOH (cousin) and my aunt left the room and I just broke down. I started crying because I had sticker shock and my mom thankfully calmed me down. I'm one of those people who like things to go as planned. I had $100 budgeted and being told it was $210 just.... UGH! I mean, I had the money, I just don't like having to pay $600 for the dress and $210 for alterations. KWIM? There aren't any private seamstresses that will do wedding gowns within 60 miles.

This was my first wedding meltdown. I sure hope there aren't more... Now I'm just concerned something else will go wrong and I'll have to shell out even more cash. Did this happen to any of you?

On a side note, I may have just freaked out because I'm graduating in a month, don't have a job lined up, and FI just decided he's joining the military in January. Bleh. Whine over. =D

  • DB is notorious for overpriced alterations.  If you are unhappy with the price find an independent seamstress.

  • I wish I could, Hoboken, but there aren't any seamstresses within 60 miles. Duds, yes, I got it bustled, taken in, and cups sewn in. Of course, they also had to take in under the arms which added to the cost.

FI got upset when I got home because I've spent over $800 on a dress.... we just feel it's ridiculous. That's one month's bills. I'll just be glad when all of this is over and I can stop spending money. Especially since it's been taken in so much (since I'm so teeny) that I will never be able to sell it as not one is as small as I am.

  • Um.. ok.. so graduation is stressful, yes (I'm graduating soon, too!) and Military is stressful (H deploys soon!)
    however.. meltdowns happen. NBD.
I would, however find a different place to get your wedding gown altered. I understand there may not be seamstresses near you, however most dry cleaners do alterations as well. My dry cleaner is FANTASTIC at alterations! I mean.. seriously amazing.. and she works at a little hole-in-the-wall place. Ask around.. you'de be surprised.. I still feel like that's pretty steep for alterations and I wouldn't trust DB with them personally..
  • DB always is high in the alterations department, but it sounds like your dress needed a lot of alterations done to it.  I know that it is a lot of money and I know that you think it is ridiculous spending $800+ on a wedding dress but, you bought the dress and even though it is for only one day, it is important that it fits correctly...if not you will be fussing with it the entire day and end up hating the way it looks in pictures.  If there is truly no other place you can go to have it altered I would pay the money...I would rather pay for it to be right then just deal with a too big dress.

  • have you checked dry cleaners in the area?  Sometimes they have very talented seamstresses, but they just don't advertise it as that's not their primary business.  I've had lots of alterations done at different dry cleaners with nice results and excellent prices.
