Dinner and a question?

Re: Dinner and a question?

  • We had a lot of vaccination discussions on E around this time last year.  Some of them got heated.  I wish a crazy would come in here and start spouting nonsense.  I'm in a fightin' mood.

In the US, generally it's a rule that kids have to be vaccinated, but you can get around it.  It's all-or-nothing, in my opinion.  If outbreaks of childhood diseases start happening, even vaccinated children can be at risk.  I would be pissed if my future kid died of some mutated strain of measles because of unvaccinated children.

If you don't believe in vaccinating, that's totally your prerogative, but you shouldn't be allowed to expose other children.

  • J&K- your siggy is so NFW. It cracks me up tho. please keep it.

so for dinner- we are going to a friends house. She is throwing a large dinner for a bunch of us. I am expecting loads of Italian food.

As for the vacs- I have mixed feelings. I got them as a kid and I am totally fine... however I think there are some valid concerns and I think when I have kids I will definitely think twice and talk to a lot of doctors. The thing is- I think the vast majority of them are probably fine but I think there are definitely some people that have suffered from them.

So basically I have no strong opinion but I am cautious...

<div>I agree. As far as I know, there's no way of getting around it here. Your records are all sent to the school and you get a letter if you're due for one, and a date to have it by. If you don't, you're suspended and not allowed on school property. I had all of mine though, so I dunno how serious they are about it.</div>

Very true. People just don't want to wait it out. It's all about the quick fix.

I've taken antibiotics 2 times in the last 7 or 8 years. Once for a UTI which was VERY necessary, trust me. And once for some weird, terrible pain I was having in my teeth and jaw. I don't know what it was. It disappeared and never came back.
  • I do think exposure to germs is a good thing, to some degree. Im disgusting and never wash my veggies/food and I never get sick. Your body NEEDS a chance to build up a resistance to certain bacteria, to learn to fight off illness and what not. I think vacinating for certain things that are more hazardous is smart (ie, mumps, meningitis), but you gotta let your kid get dirty and build up his immune system.

[QUOTE]My coworkers and I went out for lunch today (aaaand kinda decided since we were all tired and bored to take nearly 2 hours heh) and my lunch had WAY more calories and fat than I expected (i got a freaking sandwich, a chicken sandwich and it somehow had over 700cals and 40g of fat?!) so Im having carrots and beer for dinner. I think vaccines are smart.

Haha, you kill me Nebb. Where did you get the sandwich from? Was it from a regular deli or some place like Panera?

I hate Panera because all their stuff is so basic and seemingly healthy yet their sandwiches are 500 cals.

Something like that, a chain called boston pizza here. It appeared so innocent on the menu but little did I know it had MORE FAT than any freaking sandwich on the god damn menu. It wasnt even that big :(

OH MY GOD WE CAN'T BE FRIENDS I LOVE PANERA!

The stuff isn't bad if you do the pick two with half a sandwich and the classic salad (which is my fave because their balsamic viniagrette is seriously the greatest thing I've ever put in my mouth).

I must say DH and I were very upset to learn his nephew and his wife forged documents to get their son into pre-school. It is ridiculous to put other children in danger because you are against them.

I'm starting to wonder if this whole anti-vac uprising is whats causing the return of the whooping cough.

I had them, my son had them, and we are both fine. My older brother suffered from polio as a child because he missed his second round of treatment. He's fine, but he who knows.

Oh don't get me wrong, I've only eaten at Panera two or three times. I like it, it's delicious. But I always felt like they came across as "healthy". And by healthy I mean different than fast food.

I think they have better ingredients than a fast food place, but I just got annoyed with how many cals and grams of fat are in their meals sometimes. There's a lot of options there and I know you can pick what you want. But I just feel like a turkey and avocado sandwich on ciabatta (sp?) bread shouldn't be worth so many  calories and whatnot, KWIM?

This.  I played in the dirt as a kid and was probably horrible about washing my hands.  But I'm still alive, and hardly ever get sick, maybe a minor sniffle, but that's about it.  I don't have any antibacterial stuff in the house, don't carry around hand sanitizer, I still never get sick.  My immune system must rock, and it's good to keep it in good shape by letting it do what it's supposed to do, fight off the germies.

Yeah I second this. My mom wanted my son to live in a bubble. I truly believe this is why people are so sick anymore, no immunity. And Anna's comments about the antibiotic overuse, this too. One of my co-workers jumps to the doctor for antibiotics a couple times a month when her "glands feel swollen" OMG, you have a cold, get over it like the rest of us do.

  • I agree Nebb. The only antibacterial thing I have in the house is the handsoap in the bathroom. Maybe it's just me, but if it belongs anywhere it's in the bathroom.

I don't clean with any crazy products either except for the kitchen countertops and the bathroom.
