Changing your name?

Re: Changing your name?

  • I really don't know what we are going to choose yet. We both agreed that we want one name for our future family, but can't decide which one for different reasons. We're both attached to our given names (but like each others), are both against hyphanation (for one reason or another) and are at a total standstill about it. He just really likes his and I was seven when I decided I was keeping mine because I love it and my dad is an only child with all girls. Any thoughts?

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Changing your name? : LOL! I can't tell you how many times I've said, "I'm not sure which name it's under..." However, I will say that I am not the one who shortens it, it's the people who put it in the computer. I consistenly used Maiden Married, no hyphen, but the people who entered it took it upon themselves to eliminate one name or the other, or treat my maiden name like a middle name so they alphabetized it as Married, First Maiden. Add to all of that the fact that I never changed my name legally so it was still First Maiden on all legal paperwork, so that's how work submitted it to insurance...yeah. It got wacky. Life has been SO much easier since I went back to just being First Maiden (although I'm sure more than one person has wondered if H and I divorced).

This has been my experience as well. I wish I had just picked one and been done with it. Now I find myself just using DH's name.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests. Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I'm keeping mine. I have a million reasons why I shouldn't-- his name is less complicated than mine (mine is a real PITA for other people to get right), his last name actually SOUNDS better with my first name than my current maiden name does, he would like me to take his (tough noogies, sweetheart), I really want people to know that we're a "team"..even my own father, whose name I would be propogating, encouraged me to change my name to "keep things easy."

And as much as I'd like to say it's an equality thing, the real reason I want to keep my name is that the thought of me not being Lauren MyCurrentLastName honestly provokes this strong emotional response that makes me want to cry. I really can't explain why, though I suspect it may be an identity issue. Weird, no?
