[QUOTE]Thanks guys :) I just met with the guys (owner, other guy and the person I worked with before who recommended me for the position) and Im seriously pumped. I think its going to be really great and I will have a lot of room to grow finally. I wish the hurdle of quitting was already behind me.

    Good luck!
  • Im pretty sure if there was an emergency slide I would have used it days ago.
  • Nebb- so is everything signed and finalized with the new place? I am always terrified about making a transition before the new path is fully set in stone.

as for quitting... I would say never quit without notice. HOWEVER.. given that the other guy is quitting immediately... if you give notice and stick around... you will be left with all the horrible awkwardness the other employee left behind. I would say go together or stay together at this point...

  • Nothing is signed up the job has been offered and weve met to discuss it and theyre expecting me tuesday morning to sign all of my papers then. I was pretty much given the job without an interview just because of the recommendation of the sales guy im with now and the one who left to work there already. I was told the job was mine before anyone else so I feel pretty secure.
  • Nebb - are you in Ontario?  definitely give two weeks notice if possible. :)  i've found that new employers generally appreciate that you have to give 2 weeks to your old employer.

it makes me nervous that you don't have a written job offer from the new place.

  • I've always given notice, it's the professional thing to do, even if you have no doubt you'll never encounter these people again, you just never know and better to not burn bridges if you can tolerate two more weeks of it; perhaps they'll say well you can go now but we'll pay you for the two weeks.  I've been given no notice resignations by employees and it really pisses me off. :-)  No, not because Im an asshole boss, people sometimes just change interests or whatever the case may be, something new comes along and they're anxious to get started so they quit suddenly.

  • oh I know its not the right thing to do but... I just cant stay. 1) they want me to start tuesday and 2) I know he will make my life a living hell those last 2 weeks. Professionally I can get a stellar reference from the sales guy or the guy who hired me who I am going to work with at the new place. Professionally, I dont truly think its an issue.

[QUOTE]i realize that things work differently in the US but i would definitely give your 2 weeks notice (it's unprofessional to quit without notice so i'd try to avoid it at all costs).   if you give 2 weeks notice and they decide they don't want you to come in after tomorrow, they still have to pay you for two weeks because they can't fire you without cause.  (at least here in canada)

You can't fire someone who has quit anyway. Make damn sure you put it in writing, Nebb.

Also - if you're accruing your vacation pay (rather than getting it paid out on each cheque) - without giving 2 weeks' notice - the employer is not liable to pay you that money.

Whenever ever people quit here without giving their notice, I always, ALWAYS keep their vacation pay.

  • I have always had it drilled into my head that you must give notice. It just looks really bad when you don't. Very unprofessional.
