[QUOTE]I read Gone Girl, per Rach's recommendation (and then, shortly after, everyone else's recommendation). I liked it, but thought it could have been SO much better. I felt like she glossed over a lot of the really suspenseful stuff that she could've dragged out for even more suspense. I'm reading The Forgotten Garden, by Kate Morton, but haven't gotten very far. <strong>ETA: I read The Handmaid's Tale in high school and remember loving it. I'd like to read it again, but I'm afraid I'll hate it. That happened with Lolita -- read in college and loved, tried reading a couple years ago and couldn't even finish it. :-(

Do you think a lot of the books we loved then are about where we were in our lives at the time?

  • I'm reading some fluffy chick-lit right now. It's called The Penny Pincher's Club. Not bad, but not one of the best I've read. Pretty soon I'm going to start The Map of Time by Felix Palma. It's about how H.G. Wells is asked to time travel to certain incidents where he can save literary classics from nonexistance. I love anything that takes place in Victorian London.

[QUOTE]I am reading "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks"- it's a true story about a black woman whose cervical cancer cells were scraped and donated to science without her knowledge. Hre cells were the first cell base to ever continually reproduce and they've been used in every major modern advance in medicine ever since. Her family has never seen a dime and she died from her cancer. So far it is REALLY good.

Star, I read this earlier this year and it's definitely a book that makes you think. I'm not sure what you do for a living, but it made me think alot about research in the clinical field and all of the wrongs that were committed in the past.

  • I'm about to start a book about fairies. I don't even know what it's about other than that. I think it's called The Fairy Circle.

I just finished Flame of Surrender by Rhiannon Paille (sp?). I do not recommend it. The story had potential, but her writing style is just awful and pretty much nothing happens for about 100 pages. And I get annoyed by "we met for one whole day and now we're soul mates and pine for each other all day long!" romances.

[QUOTE]I just barely started Shadow of Night, the 2nd in the All Souls Trilogy.  Before this, I read State of Wonder by Ann Patchett, which I loved.  A medical researcher goes to the Amazon to try and found out how her coworker died there.  He had been sent to get the status on fertility research being done on a tribe where the women continued to have children into the 70's.

    1) Handmaid's Tale gave me nightmares. The concept of that book freaks the hell out of me.

    2) I'm almost done reading A Discovery of Witches. Next is either the sequel or "The Leftovers" by Tom Perolta. It's about a town where some citziens just vanished into thin air, well how the people leftover react.

    3) I LOVE Ann Patchett. All her stuff is enjoyable but if you haven't read Bel Canto you need to. It's one of the best books I've ever read.

Ha, never! I said that in my review too, that their romance is based on nothing and the guy turned into a stalker until the girl finally just got naked. So irritating. Maybe I'm just used to my own female characters who give guys a hard time and don't make it so easy for them.

Probably! I also read Lolita as part of an English class, and so my opinion of the book likely had a lot to do with the themes and discussions of the class.

Just finished Running Barefoot by Amy Harmon. Still thinking about it I liked it that much :) (it was romantic :) )

The first half is about the science - the making the cells, the life of Henrietta, what the cells are then used, etc.  The second half is about the state of Henrietta's living family.  There's a lot of misunderstanding between the family and the science community due to lack of education.  I felt like the author took advantage of the situation as a way to make the second half more "dramatic," but all it was was sensationalism.

I did a whole series on HPV/Henrietta on my blog.  It starts with the book, then dives down into patient symptoms, cellular changes, protein changes, and finally drug discovery.  I take the whole issue personally since HPV was the basis of my thesis.

  • You didn't like Handmaid's Tale? Maybe because I read it as a teenger it really struck me.

I'm currently reading "How we die", a VERY descriptive book of the medical and biological processes of death. It's demystifying and fascinating. Also a bit emotionally jarring.

I'm also reading Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy and a book about yellow fever in the 1800s.

cool! thanks! I think the family stuff attracted me to the book. The lack of ANY compensation for Henrietta always shocks me (I first heard about this in law school). Then again, I understand the intellectual debate defending the scientific community in this. It's a very gray area.

  • Blue, I agree with you on Handmaid's Tale - the storyline is gripping, but not the greatest writing.

Dot - How is The Mermaid Chair so far? I was so-so on Secret Life of Bees, so  I've been debating this new one.

I'm in the middle of several books currently, but the one I've been moving through the most lately is The Harbinger. I struggled with the writing for the first chapter, but I'm enjoying it more now. It's a pretty quick read, actually.

I've only found one book ever that I just absolutely could not get through. Usually even if I don't like the book, I can at least finish it.
  • I just finished up the Mortal Instrument series. My 14 year old daughter loved it and I like to bond with her through a love of books. It wasn't bad at all, a real quick read, nice light summer reading.

I liked the Mermaid Chair well enough. I think it was a little better than The Secret Life of Bees.

Beofre that I read The Price of Tides which I loved, loved, loved! I've never seen the movie, but I try to get a few classic books in every year, and I found this one at the Thrift store. Can't resist 25cent paperbacks.

Right NOW I'm reading some craptastic thing that I can't even remember the name of. It's based on a biblical story but retold in gold rush times. I'll be done with that soon, so may read the Eragon series which two of my kids loved and reread over and over. I like to have a good long series to read!

This is one of my favorite series. I really love the spin-off Clockwork Angel series too.

They are making a movie of the first book and I hate who they chose for Jace. And after following Clare on Twitter, I kind of don't like her as a person now. Hopefully this won't affect my reading her books in the future.
  • Sesh- we're plannig on getting the Clockwork Angel series as well. Glad to know they're good!

And mental note to self-do not follow Clare on twitter. I hate when I can't stand a book because I don't like the author. Stuff like that ruins  it for me!
