Weird wedding traditions

My Fi's parents were at our house this weekend and they were telling us that back when they got married, it was customary to assign someone to opening the gifts so they'd be on display during the reception.  That seems really weird and akward to me.  We'd never do that - I want to have the fun of opening our presents.  And, it seems like that'd be a good way to either get your gifts stolen, or for people to compare how nice their gifts are.

Does anyone still do this?  Has anyone heard of it before?

I've never heard of that before!  I'd be mortified if someone (who was not the bride or groom) was sitting there opening a present I've brought to a wedding!

WOW! That's a new one! I've heard of people doing a gift opening (which would be morifying enough) but not having someone else do it...

I'd have to say the dollar dance is the one I've seen that I hate the most. 2nd is the whole garter thing Undecided

Totally agree! I'm leaving both of those out. And I didn't think the gifts were opened by anyone during the wedding/reception.

I've never heard of that before, nor seen it. I think that's a little tacky, not to mention mortifiying for anyone that didn't get you guys a big gift. I too agree that it's an invitation to getting your stuff stolen.

    I've heard of that.

My aunt married a Greek and although it's great that they really get into their man dances, when it's the ONLY thing being done after the meal, it's annoying, and seeing old men trying to dance it weird.

Wow, I couldn't do that either! We aren't doing a garter or flower toss either, and got crap about it from FMIL and FSIL. FSIL even said "well are you even planning on doing anything? Are you even doing a first dance and cake cutting?" Um, yeah... just don't feel the need to do a garter/flower toss!

I've never heard of that either.  I realize not everyone likes the garter toss and bouquet toss, but we're doing them.  I think they can be done in a nice way.

<div>I agree. At first I didn't really want to do the garter toss but I think I'll look back and wish we just had just done it. My brother was really gross about it at his wedding and because of that I totally shyed away from the idea but I've been to a few weddings since where it was done much more tastefully and that made me feel a bit better about it. There's a lot of "traditional" stuff that we're leaving out or changing and this is one thing I think we're going to keep. </div>

The unwrapping of the gifts is very weird.

In my area wrapped gifts aren't very popular at the actual wedding, people mostly bring cards. There was actually one gift on the table at my cousin's wedding on Friday and it was the first time I've ever seen that before haha

Just wanted to add this story from my cousin's wedding.  So my cousin throws the bouquet and my sister catches it.  Her husband throws the garter and it lands in front of FI! Since the wedding was mostly my cousin's husband's family, they had no idea why everything was so awkward and why he only put the garter on her ankle lol

So with that said we're not doing a garter toss although I still want to do a bouquet toss.

I caught the bouquet at my cousin's wedding so she quickly told the DJ that they'd do a reverse thing where I'd put the garter on the guy who caught it.  This was to make things less awkward and so that a guy wouldn't have his hands up my leg in front of my then-boyfriend.

We're doing the bouquet/garter toss because it's fun and I wouldn't like it if it were raunchy.  I think that it would be funny to have a string of colored scarves (like magicians have) up there that the groom has to pull out before he grabs the garter.
