I think I'm Allergic to My Engagement Ring!

Seriously! My ring set is 18K white gold (so it has added nickel in the gold) and normally I don't wear it with the kids and dog and laundry and general gunk...but I've been wearing it for a few days straight and I've gotten a small red blistery rash under where the ring sits on my finger. :(

To test if it's just sensitive skin or a real allergy, I've been wearing a silver ring, a costume ring, and a yellow gold ring (no added nickel) and nothing has happened. My e-ring doesn't fit my other ring finger (weird, right? lol) and I don't have any other white gold rings to try. I've always typically worn silver jewelry, so I've never noticed anything like this. I'm kinda bummed...but kinda happy at the same time. This might mean more ring shopping...but it would have to be yellow gold (not a fan,) silver (can it hold diamonds?) or platinum (can't afford that.)

This is just weird and I never even considered this a possibility when we bought the rings! I guess I don't really have a question, just complaining/venting a little.

Re: I think I'm Allergic to My Engagement Ring!

  • My FI has the same problem except he is allergic to nickel. Nickel is in all of his belts, so it causes a problem! one thing that we have done and that the doctor suggested was to put clear nailpolish on it. He has to reapply it sometimes but it seems to have worked. I hope you can find a solution!
  • I'm thinking it's the nickel in the white gold because the yellow gold ring I have on isn't doing anything to my skin. I used to do the nail polish thing with my earrings, but I'm a little weirded out about painting my e-ring, ya know?! lol
  • Two comments:

    (1) I have the same issue with my mom's ring that she gave me. The jeweler where FI bought my engagement ring offered to paint the inside of it with platinum. I did not end up doing this (yet), so I am not sure how much money this would cost, but it is an idea!

    (2) Make sure that you keep your ring clean. If there are any holes or inents along the back of the band, soap, skin cells, etc., can get caught in there and irritate your skin. If your ring has anything on the inside of the band where irritating materials could get stuck, try this before buying a new ring :)

Good luck!!! Sucks to be allergic, huh?

  • this may be silly, but could it be it's a little small - mine gives me a red ring around my finger - but it's also kinda tight - esp. when I'm hot (when I'm cold it's loose) and I also play with it all day too...
  • Can you see that the metal is changing colors?  I ask because white gold need to be dipped in rhodium every so often.  When it starts to appear yellow it should be dipped.

My jeweler said once a year should be fine, but we dip mine every 4 months because without the wedding bands its very thin and the rhodium wears very quickly as I wear it all day everyday.

If it never caused a problem in the beginning it could be that the rhodium was protecting your finger.

    Just a thought.
  • Also, if you just have to get another ring look into palladium. I'm not a fan on yellow gold either and I'm allergic to all kinds of random things. My e-ring is palladium. Everyone think it's silver, but it's not. =P

That's SO funny! We bought the plain wooden one to DIY that exact thing! ...and here I thought I was being original lol! Thank you! I might just buy that one...
  • I had the same problem with my ring! I had a callus almost. I posted on the Beauty Board about it because I didn't want a red bump on my finger during my E-pics. They recommended I make sure I take the ring off at night and when I was my hands to make sure the ring was COMPLETELY dry and my hands were COMPLETELY dry.  This solved the problem for me!

If it's an allergy, then my advice won't help at all and I think the PPs have great advice ;)

I think I'll try this because when I would wear it occasionally (like going out, etc) it never irritated me. It was on my finger for a few days straight (with the exception of showering) before it irritated me. My hands are in water a LOT every day so this actually could help.
  • I have the same problem, pure silver is fine but white gold for some reason have so much stuff mixed into it, it can make me allergic sometimes. My earings were white gold, but FI had them palladium plated so I wouldn't get an allergic reaction. The nailpolish thing works but I am not sure you would want to do this to such an important piece of jewelry. I would look into getting it palladium plated on the inside, it looks like white gold/ platinum but is way cheaper than platinum.
  • silver can be really great! And it has the added benefit of being cheaper (much cheaper) then gold. A good example of the difference in price: I found my FH's wedding ring in silver, it was the perfect ring and screamed his name. It was made by a local artist, and even though I've never really had any problems with silver, I thought I would see how much more it would cost in gold. The silver ring is $100. The gold ring is $1,000. Same ring, same size.

You can still get sparkles in a silver ring, only problem is that most stores will not have silver rings with diamonds in them, since silver isn't commonly used as an engagement rings. You need to shop at locally owned jewelry shops where the owner makes all the jewelry they sell and works with silver. If you find a ring that you love in gold, inquire into the price in silver. Also, a good thing to note is that if you find a ring that you love with a rock that's not a diamond, you can buy it and have a jeweler pop out the rock and replace it. I looked into this bc I wanted my FH's ring to have his birth stone in it, it's pretty affordable. Another option is to have a jeweler drill holes into the ring you love and place diamonds in them, this is also something that should be easy and fairly cheap. I was quoted at $20/hole drilled plus the price of the stone by two different jewelers, and one offered a discount when I did more then a set number of holes.
