I wonder this as well, especially since we already have a bunch in Boston (one smack dab in the middle, near Symphony Hall).  Was it the one in Jamaica Plain?  That WF faced a bunch of community backlash as well because it replaced a local market with lower prices.

He didn't actually stop them opening- he "strongly encouraged" them to abandon their bid in his letter:

    http://bostinno.com/2012/07/25/read-mayor-tom-meninos-full-letter-to-chick-fil-a-about-not-coming-to-boston-image/

I wouldn't have defriended you over your "I think there is a better way to fight for more (equal) rights than trying to take away other people rights."  I think that is very valid.

But I DID, upon reading his letter, think "You GO, Menino!"

  • Sadly the corruption of politicians here does not stop in Boston, it extends to the 'burbs as well.  I think it's a requirement in MA.

Menino will never be out of the mayor's office until he's dead and even then they will find a way to keep him there.  Look how often Teddy Kennedy got voted back in.

Fort the record; there is a CFA in the North Shore Mall in Peabody.

There is also a CFA in the Burlington Mall.

About Wal-Mart, they don't have the most employee-friendly policies, so maybe Menino was hoping to get a large store in that would be a better workplace?
  • This sounds a lot like what the alderman is doing here. He states that he can deny pemits because zoning permits are not a right. Is that what menino is going off of?

Personally the reason I won't spend a dime at CFA has nothing to do with the CEOs beliefs. He can believe whatever the heck he wants and they can base their business on Christian principles.

However, I will be damned (no pun intended) if I'll give any money to a business that donates a portion of their profits to organizations whose main goal is to block gay marriage. I am sure there are other companies that do this as well and I'll boycott them too if it comes to light. I'll admit I should do some more research.

I was happy when the Hensen Company just severed relations with them and supposedly donated the last residual check to GLAAD.

All that being said I think trying to prevent their opening of a location is a poor choice. People and other businesses can choose not to do business with them if they wish but until they violate any laws i don't think they should blocked like that.

Wal-Mart would give many jobless people in Dorchester jobs.  Him and I disagree on that part of it.  I think a job is better than no job, he doesnt.  So lets let Dorchester continue to be the shitthole that it is.

If that's the case, he's kind of being contradictory to himself. Outside of Wal-Mart, there aren't really any major chains that are cheaper while having a better work environment. If he thinks Whole Foods shouldn't go in because poor people can't afford, well there goes Target, Meijer, Sams, Costco and whatever other large store exist.

He sounds like a grade A douche who should be run out of town by an angry mob with pitchforks.

The funny thing about the Whole Foods thing is that in those cities, there are basically NO places to get fresh produce etc.  He said it would put the small corner convenience stores out of business.

Im sorry, but if an organic grocery store is going to put a bodaga out of business, then thats sad that the cities people only have the option to buy food at a convenience store.

Also- those inner cities have really high welfare/food stamp populations.  I would much rather they have any option other than a convenience store to feed their damn families.

  • Blue, I agree with everything you've said.

Here's my UO over the whole CFA debacle. Since the dude said "guilty as charged" my FB has been blowing up with people all riled up about how they won't support CFA, and everyone should boycott them. Well the fact of the matter is, while I don't agree with the CEO, I kind of dig the fact that his company keeps 50,000+ people employed thus not needing my tax dollars to survive. And all of the people with FB status updates of  "ZOMG I WILL NOT SUPPORT ANY COMPANY THAT HATES GAYS" (re: CFA) won't get the do-gooder pat on the back from me until I know for sure that they actually research every single solitary place that they do business, and make sure that they are in 100% agreement with each and every one of their policies. Because quite honestly if you weren't aware that CFA was a company deeply rooted in Christianity, then you probably live under a rock, and are now outraged because the media told you you should be.

The place it replaced was Hi-Lo and it was ghetto beyond belief. I used to live in JP, and we went in there a few times. It was a bunch of dusty cans of Goya beans and bulk meat that looked like it should have expired a month ago. It was nasty. I am glad WF went in there.

  • Andplusalso, there is a Stop and Shop right down the street from WF in JP, so it wasn't like opening WF meant that low income residents did not have a lower price option.

It is all the yuppies that gentrified JP bitching and moaning that JP is now gentrified. I moved to JP back in 1996, when these people wouldn't have been caught dead in that neighborhood.

  • I think some of you are unaware how easy it is to block people from getting permits. I used to work in Civil Engineering as a Project Coordinator, and my job was specifically to get the various building permits from the different states/towns that each projet required, and make sure all the paperwork was in compliance. If you went to a town that didn't like you or want you there? Forget it. It took us ten years to put up a bank because of all the loopholes they kept finding to deny us, everything from not enough landscaping to signage to parking, to not a big enough "donation" to the city. I had cities "lose" plans (eight boxes of plans ended up in the dumpster) the day before a deadline. I had to drive three hours each way for an entire week so I could sit in the zoning office every day of one city until they gave me my permits, and they threatened to forcibly remove me (but dammit I got my permits). Some sites would have city officials show up almost every day just looking for a reason to shut them down. It's amazing what politics and politicians can accomplish when they want to. I fully believe that the mayor could do exactly what he is threatening.

That said, Blue, I am totally in agreement with you on this. Pretty astounding, and maddening, but not at all shocking.
