Wedding Woes

Atlas Shrugged review

I liked it.

I haven't read the book yet. I started it, and got to about page 20 before I was distracted by shinier fiction. I was afraid the movie was going to be boring or too dense to follow if I hadn't read the book, but it wasn't.

It is a lot of talking. This is not an action film by any means. But it's fairly well-written, and the performances were excellent. It's a team of character actors, so you may well spend a lot of time trying to figure out where you've seen "that guy" before. People I spotted: the Mormon doctor from a couple seasons of House ago; Armin Shimmerman as an anti-capitalist. What would Quark say?!

It's under two hours, and it does end on a cliffhanger, because there are two more parts scheduled.

It is not heavy-handed about Objectivism (Rand's philosophy).

And it was shot in Royal Gorge, CO! I feel a burning need to take a trip west and try to be an extra.

So...in the book, when you get to the John Gault speech?
    skip it.

You can (and should) go back to read it later but, sheesh, even for 'preachy' stuff, i hate 30 pages of 'preaching' in the middle of the story.

The movie will be on our list
  • My dad drove over an hour to a movie theatre in King of Prussia, PA last night to see it. He liked it.

I'll probably have DH download it.

  • It's in almost 500 theatres now - it might be near you, LS. Of course, I only pay $4.50 for a matinee, so it's almost always worth a big-screen trip for me.

  • It is showing near me, but it wasn't showing near him.

I'm not sure that I could convince DH to see it in the theatre, but maybe at home.

  • It got really horrible reviews.  I'm super disappointed because I love the book.  The closest theatre to me that's playing it is an hour away and I'm not sure it's worth the drive.
