I'm reading the taking charge of your fertility book because we are going to attempt FAM starting sometime later this year. The book talks about how all the different discharges a woman has are normal and that ovulatory discharges are thick/sticky/whatever on purpose for semen to survive. The book asserts over and over that women aren't having vaginal infections all the time, assuming that's what women think.

Maybe it is just me, but I never thought I had to douche or to go to a doctor when I had discharge. Am I unnaturally comfortable with my business or is the book exaggerating?

Thats weird. I always have figured discharge is normal and nothing to worry about unless its green or smells really odd (sorry, thats what I read somewhere)

Douching actually causes infections sometimes. Discharge is normal through out the month, not just before your period. As long as it's not itchy, burning or the discharge being greenish and with a smell, you should be okay.

Regarding planning a pregnancy, you can check out fertility website, enter date of your last period and will tell you most fertile days of the month (if your cycle is regular).

considering that I'm a nurse going into women's health, I know the difference in discharges, and have seen quite a few different kinds in person. yea, I can tell when something is an infection or not. it's usually the smell. pretty much, you ain't supposed to stink. if you stink, get it checked out. if it's green, PLEASE get it checked out. oh, and I wouldn't have sex between the time of noticing said weird discharge, and getting it checked out. seen this too many times in the ER, then we have to basically beg and plead people to tell their partners to come in and get checked out too.

and don't douche. it definitely increases the risk of infections. I've seen more vaginal infections from women who douche than those who don't. the vagina is a self-cleansing organ.

I figured if it was unhealthy it would smell abnormally bad. As long as things dont stink down there, i assume things are in good working order.

I always heard that discharge was usually the vagina 'cleaning' itself. I learned a lot from sex classes in high school... including a distaste for cottage cheese.

Nebb, not disgusting at all. I discuss this sh!t on a daily basis (or shiftly basis?) when I'm working. usually while eating lunch in the break room.

Nebb, don't know the exact amount, that was never taught to me. I don't think one should need more than a pantiliner a day for just normal discharge though.

Night, I'm always surprised at how little people know about their bodies or what they are putting into them. so yes, often people have zero idea about what is going on in their southern region. I actually feel very lucky if one of my patients knows what their pills are that they're taking, much less what it is for or why they are taking it, and I certainly don't expect my patients to actually know what the hell their bodies are doing.

When I was in high school I wondered why I had so much. Then I researched it and figured out it was normal. I am the same as Nebb, as long as it doesn't smell (or it isn't a funky color) I figure it's normal.

Apparently I have no shame. I wore one every day for awhile. I found it was helpful to keep my jeans fresher for multiple wearings and my underwear looking newer longer. I stopped though. There was no particular reason for stopping or starting.

Nebb, not that I've seen. I believe a minority of the population has a need to wear them everyday, but that's still within normal range. most people wear them at the ends of their periods. possibly TMI, but I only wear them to catch any possible leakage from tampons, or on the REALLY light days.

Jk. I dont use them everyday, only if I'm close to my period or going to be sitting a long time, ex plane flights or long car rides. Just dont feel so fresh after a long ride. lol

Ok, I wear them my entire period just incase I get careless and theres a leak, but never normally during the month. I didnt know if that was normal or not.

This reminds me of one of the parts of A Chorus Line:

"I looked in the book for milky discharge...milky discharge...gonorrhea! I mean, I hadn't even started yet! So I went to my priest and told him and he said "who have you been with, my son?" "no one...no one!" "then how can you have gonorrhea?"" ...or something like that. I'm impressed that I even remember that much.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

TMI, but I do. Well, did before, and have no idea what to expect now. I don't know if it was bc or what, but as I got older I found that I needed to. I casually asked my gyn and he said it was fine, but I don't like feeling like it might wet through. Sometimes it's bad.

TheSun- hahahaha ouch!
The first (only?) infection I got was while on my first vacation with T for my first time in San Francisco. Walking around shopping/ sightseeing on our last day was miserable.
I realize thats TMI but I've chalked this whol thread up as TMI
