How big is too big?

As ive mentioned before, I have lost a fair bit of weight since last summer. A lot of my summer clothes from last year are now loose on me, and ones that were too small fit me now.

I have 4 pairs of shorts in question, two have probably an excess of 3" around the waist and I can pull them on and off without undoing them, and the other two fit in a really weird way and make me look like a have a gunt (sorry).

I showed my husband today, and asked if I should just chuck them (give to charity) or not? His response was that I need to stop looking for reasons to throw out my clothes so that I can go shopping and they look fine, and I just need a belt. While I can see his point, kind of, I dont want droopy baggy butt all summer. I would rather NOT look like crap in my clothes if I can avoid it, but he is insisting I keep them.

So my question, how big is too big? If you could pull your pants on and off like a pair of sweats without them having an elastic waist band, would you still wear them? Is he right, should I just suck it up?

  • Congrats on the weight loss!

I say go shopping. Clothes that are too big will not flatter your figure.
  • They sound too big and sloppy now.   Crotch and butt sag is not pretty.
You could probably send them to me.

  • Even a little big is too big.  You should not be wearing clothes that are too big for you, and certainly not if you have to wear a belt to keep them from falling off.  That's ridiculous.  What's the point of losing weight if you're going to wear the same clothes?  A person might as well gain the weight back, just so their clothes fit properly!

I dont think my husband understands "unflattering" - he thinks clothes are clothes and as long as they dont have rips or paint on them, they should be worn.
  • when i was losing weight i had a pair of jeans i rolled like sweatpants, that's when my mom said i need to go shopping.

I would buy some new basics, but since you're still losing, I wouldn't buy a ton of stuff.

I am going to tuck this thought away for later and use it if necessary.
  • I think if you can pull them off - they're way too big.  I think you (and everyone) deserve clothes that fit.  Baggy shorts aren't going to do anything for your new shape.

I only want to buy two pairs, tops. I need a grubbing around the house pair for gardening and yard work, and then a nicer pair.

I have two pairs of gauchos I found in a box today that are too tight, I can do them up but they are too tight in my hips and thighs, which I am hoping to fit into by the end of the summer. He thinks its stupid to keep clothes that dont fit and want to throw out clothes that "do".

He truly is. He wears jeans and band tshirts. Thats it, thats all. All of the nice clothes ive bought him sit in the closet unworn.

I feel like im just talking crap about him, and I kinda am, but I am getting the impression im right here and hes being ridiculous, which is kind of what I was hoping for.
  • no offence, I'm sure he's a fantastic guy, but when it comes to clothes, he doesn't sound like he knows! :) typical guy!

  • I would chuck 'em.  I have a pair of jeans that is starting to get to that point.  They're one of my favorite and only jeans that I'll wear to work (cheap jeans for being at work where food gets spewed routinely), so I might have to go shopping too.

I agree with Pink, wearing ill fitting clothes while you're losing weight it's going to be any more encouraging to lose more weight.

    And yay for trimming down!!
  • For me it depends on what they are. I have a pair of khaki cargo pants that once were 2 sizes too big and are now slightly snug. Those I would constantly wear even though I could pull them off without undoing the button because they were ridiculously comfortable with the bagginess.
Now, I wash and dry clothes too big and if they are still to big after the shrink I donate them.
Personally, I think if you no longer feel comfortable/attractive/happy in them, they need to go away. It doesn't matter if it's because they are too big, too small, too old, etc.

Perhaps you should take on a painting project this weekend  :)
  • I'd be ok with wearing them around the house, but I wouldn't wear them in public.

But then, I'm wearing a wife beater right now, so I'm not exactly a beacon of fashion.
  • Nebb, honestly, I saw the before and after pictures from that thread a few weeks ago. You absolutely deserve to wear clothes that show off your amazing hard work and make you look as good as you feel (and deserve). No need to spend tons. Get a few classic things that show off your awesome new bod.
  • I've lost about two sizes since starting Jenny Craig.  I still wear my old clothes around the house, but I bought a bought a few new pairs of pants for work and a nice pair of jeans for going out.

In your case, I think I'd keep the old shorts for now but splurge on one nice pair.  I'd also make a point of walking in front of my husband a lot while wearing the new ones.  And wiggling.

    But, y'know.  I'm shameless.

Thanks :) that put a big smile on my face.

I think he thinks i do want to spend a ton, maybe thats where the resistance was coming from. I would be fine spending less than 50$ and calling it a day.

I changed my mind after reading this.

    Awesome advice.

  • And you can have tons of fun shopping! No need to buy 100 dollar pants. You can shop around and make a day out of it (go to lunch! but a coffee to keep you company) and just enjoy trying on a bunch of sizes smaller :)

Thanks :) Even if I do buy some it wont be until may when its consistantly warm and I really need the shorts. This has helped me build a much better arguement for next time...
  • Get rid of the clothes that are too big.  You deserve new clothes AND the big clothes are an excuse for gaining weight.  It's great incentive to know that you need to be X size to fit what you have.

That is a good point. I bought a bunch of pants a few months ago that were all a bit tight, and I made them fit. I worry about becoming complacent and not continuing to lose so not having something bigger to wear if I gain would be good incentive.
  • You need new pants.

  • Nebb, there's no better feeling after all the hard work you've done (and I saw your photos too) than going into the store and trying on smaller sizes and having them fit.  I speak from experience.  It's an amazing ego boost and will even push you harder.

You could also try standing on a ladder and letting your old pants fall off. That might show him....

  • Are there any decnt second hand stores around where you live?  You could take your clothes in and get a credit towards buying new clothes that fit.

That is an excellent idea! You could probably get 4 or 5 new pairs for like $20
