Price - does this sound right?

I know, I was just asking about this the other night, bear with me...

For our first anniversary, I've been wanting a new wedding band, as I've just never been crazy about my first one.  What I'd really like is a half eternity band, with alternating diamonds and yellow sapphires.

I've found a couple of rings I like online, around the $600 range.  But I'd really like to be able to try on the ring next to my e-ring to see how it looks and feels, and obviously you can't do that online.

So tonight H and I went to a pretty upscale jeweler to see if they could custom make something.  I found a band I really liked, .25 carat for $715.  I thought maybe using half sapphires would lower the price, but apparently it would be the same price for the alternating stones.  I came home and immediately looked online to see what .25 carat bands cost, and I've seen quite a large range of prices.

What do you guys think?  Does $700+ sound outrageous for the kind of ring I really want (especially when you can get a plain diamond .25 band for less than $300 some places)?  Would you pay the extra money to have the ability to try it on and have it custom made?

Re: Price - does this sound right?

  • I don't think it is too much at all.  You'll love it and wear it every day!
  • You can always find stuff cheaper online, but it's not always the same quality, and like you said, you can't try it on. I think that price sounds reasonable.
  • If it's good quality and you love it it's really not a bad price. I mean, you'll wear it every day for the rest of your life right? So I don't think it's a bad price.
  • my wedding set is .5 and was under $500 for both the ering and wband. it has 1 main stone and 6 smaller stones.
my inlaws are long time good friends with a small mom/pop jewelry store owner so they sold it to us for basically the cost of the gold and diamonds.

My band is from bluenile, and I LOVE it.  I know they do returns.  I'd at least compare to see if the ones you think you like online can be returned if you don't actually like them on you.

USUALLY, those $300 bands don't have the same quality.  Yes, there are exceptions.

    I'd do it.
