No for serious though, do you think that someone who otherwise has a career and say, signs up for the National Guard and then gets deployed, after they've reproduced, is being foolish?

I think a little bit of both. He must train for this all the time, like the guy who walked across Nigra or whatever? That's pretty ballsy too, just practicing for something like this.

Yes he still farms - he actually has been fighting rain for the past two decades. Our lake has risen 30 feet and has swallowed up 5k acres of his farmland, in part due to a wet cycle and because it hasn't stopped fucking raining. So he hasn't minded the drought too much, lol.
With that said, yeah, NO rain is hard on a farmer. They luckily got about 2.5 inches last night, as did we in the Fargo-ish area. That's what my dad would call a "million dollar rain." Our crops were a little stressed but salvageable. The rain is a HUGE help.

<div>Ours are crap. We're still at only trace rain. My H's uncle is praying for a lighting stirke at this point because at least then he could collect insurance on a burnt field. It's all crap. We figure only 1/4 of the crop is salvagable at this point. What hasn't been fried by mother nature, the damn grasshoppers have gotten too. The poor beans.</div>
Yeah that is pretty rough, chels and anna. I do remember as a very young child - before our wet cycle started - we had some very dry years. In fact our lake was in danger of drying up, that's how bad it was. It is very, very devastating when farmers can't get the rain they need (or when they get too much of it). Thus why the farm bill is important... and I'm stopping there, lol.
My dad grows a lot of stuff brandi. He is harvesting barley right now, he also grows wheat and durum, beans (soy, pinto, etc), corn, and canola. He used to grow stuff like flax and sunflowers. Flax is pretty. Sunflowers are a pain in the ass.

Also anna, I did see that some portions of SD were getting rain last night, weren't they? Not really in your area though, but it looked, from what I could tell, to be hopefully a good thing.
