I'm Lazy: Would Ritalin Help?

I know two girls who take it: one to help her study for the bar, and another because she actually has ADD.  Both of them are a whole lot more efficient than I am...  They really seem to get stuff done whereas I... um, don't.

Could occasional use of Ritalin help me, or am I doomed to go through life as a human sloth?

TIA

  • Hmm, sounds like cocain in Rx form.  You know the old saying:
    "Cocain: using tomorrows energy today"

  • I don't know much about it except that it's usually over prescribed to help keep little boys in line in class so teachers don't have to work as hard to control them, but doesn't it cause heart problems if you take too much?

<div>I think that is a possible side effect.  I wonder if just taking it occasionally - once a week or so when you really need to focus - would be safe, though.</div>
  • In my nonprofessional opinion, I have the occasional Adderal when I MUST focus and get things done.  I am also kind of lazy, and it helps tremendously.

I had a prescription for 6 months though and when I took it on a daily basis I got anxiety, so I quit.  I only have one pill left and don't want to ask for a refill, but it is nice when needed.  It really does work.

  • Its not something that you can just take when you need it. Its for people who have a chemical imbalance in their brain and NEED it to focus. Maybe you should just drink some coffee or something.

  • Sara...you are absolutely right.  It is meant for those with an actual disorder.  I have seen studies that discuss the efficacy of an occasional tablet on performance, but the drug is not intended for that sort of usage.

  • Its one of those things that bugs me, when people think they need medication to help with something it isnt intended for. Maybe its just me, but I think its crazy for people who dont need it to be taking it.

<div>How do you really know if you need it?  I'm not a 5-year-old who can't sit still in class, yet I do find it hard to focus and follow through...  </div><div>
</div><div>Also, I'm actually pretty pill-adverse.  When I have a headache or muscle pain, for example, usually try to tough it out or lie down and rest.  I don't run directly for the Advil...</div>
  • Expat, I thought it was one of those drugs that needs to build up in your system before it takes full effect?
I don't know that just one every so often would do anything.

You never have to learn any form of self-control/self-motivation, but you get the desired results, so long as you're willing to take the pill/find the vein every time you need to do something. SO EASY!!!1!!</p>
  • I judge expat for even posting this fucking ridiculous question that doesn't even warrant a response from me.

  • How do you know if you need it?  You go to a doctor who specializes in Adult ADD and you make an appointment.

This is why so many people discredit ADD as a real disease, because people who aren't diagnosed with it want to use ritalin or adderall to overcome being lazy.

While it's made for people that need it, Ritalin and Adderol do show improved concentration in just about everyone that takes it.  It is not a symptom-specific kind of drug.  However, just like people taking sleep aids for extended periods of time, you really shouldn't do this without talking to a doctor.  It's really not healthy to use drugs to supplement your body's natural chemicals and processes.

Edit: By supplement, I mean change.  It makes sense to supplement what's not there, but that doesn't sound like the case here.

It's spelled ADDERALL. Nice research. Eyeroll.

  •  I didn't google it and I don't take it so I really have no idea HOW it's spelled, and I really don't care.  I just know about these drugs because I was a psych major and everyone in college wanted to take them, which I thought was stupid then and still stupid now.

  • I didn't read anything other than the OP, but seriously?  Are you fuucking kidding me? If you don't want to be lazy-- STOP BEING LAZY.  FFS.

A psych major does not make you an expert on...well...anything, really, but certainly not on medication.

So before you start advocating for people to take prescription drugs recreationally, perhaps you should know what the fuuck youre talking about.

  • Amoro stole my comment.
  • Sorry Bec.  If you weren't such a lazy biznatch and not taking Ritalin you would have posted before me!
  • No, I'm not an expert.  But I didn't waste 4 years of my life learning about psych. disorders and how to treat them for nothing.  I work in the mental health field.  I'm not advocating for her to take anything.  If anything, the people that are telling her they take it are.  I said she shouldn't do it and it's stupid.

  • I'm not lazy, Amoro. I just have better things to do than read a stupid wedding message board full of losers who are already married.

    Oh wait...
  • GRRRRR, Amoro. A BA or a BS does not a psychologist make.

    Bec, you're such a loser.

BEC AND AMORO THROW DOWN PLEASE.
