Great thread idea... I love these stories, too.

We dated for 3 years and 1 month before we got engaged. When we get married next year we'll be together just over 4 years.

ETA: We have lived together almost the entire time we've been together. To quote pp - You know when you know.

FI and I started dating in Jan of 2003 and moved in together 5 months later. We dated for almost 7.5 years before he proposed. We are getting married in May of 2011 and will have been together 8 years and 4 months. I would have married him so much sooner but looking back now I am glad we waited. I was 19 when we started dating and I was able to grow up and become an adult before getting married. Fi mom has been married 5 times so thats where his hesitation came from!

Almost identical to me! We were together 1 year and 1 month when we got engaged, and have been engaged about 9 months (will be married this weekend). So, a total of 1 year and 10 months together.

We moved in together a little over a year and a half after we started dating. It would have been sooner if it weren't for him owning a house in a bad school district. I wouldn't have my child going to that school so we had to wait a little longer.

This is pretty close to my story. We started hanging out sometime in the summer of 2003, and became an actual couple in Sept that year. We got an apartment together in April of 2004, he proposed June of this year. We got married Nov. 6th, so we were together just over 7 years at our wedding.

He's seen a lot of divorces in his family, so we were together for a good chunk of time. I was also 19 when we met, he's only a couple years older, so that's a big part of it, too. Though we did decide that we were going to get an apartment together after dating only a few months.

When I first met him he was not into the idea of marriage at all. He told me he didn't believe in it. I must have worked him down through the years because he told me when he proposed; he now knows why people marry because they can't ever see themselves with out that other person for one moment.

We got together in April 01, moved in together in Dec 03, got engaged Sept 09 and will be married in Oct 12.

So we will have been together for 11.5 years by the time we get married.

We got a lot of "it's about time" when we finally got engaged; but FI was waiting until he finished his MBA before he proposed and we wanted to be sure that we in a really good place financially before we started planning.

Though it's been the plan all along - I think we started talking about it within 6 months of starting to date.

Well l moved in with him 4 days after we met (quick I know, but I just knew),
we both made the agreement to wait 3 years before thinking about marriage (we both had previous 3 year relationships where we were engaged and they went sour)
6 years later he proposed to me on my 30th birthday, and our 7th year of relationship will be our 1st year as husband and wife. We will be getting married in june the same month as we met so it will be easy to remember.
