Is it discrimination?

Re: Is it discrimination?

I feel like this falls on the other side of the public/private spectrum from yesterday's example.

If you're using funding and space provided by a public university, you have to adhere to the same rules as any other similarly "public" organization.  I don't think it's a big deal to say that on-campus activities have to adhere to the same non-discrimination policies as the university sponsoring them.  Students who don't want an atheist in their Catholic Students Club can seek out or create a fully private organization, not supported by public money, to create an organization that's as exclusionary as they like.

Also, I think the fear that atheists are going to storm the Christian student organizations and try to take over is ludicrous.  In law school I went to a bunch of events hosted by the Black Law Students Association (I'm super-pasty white) because they had speakers/volunteer events that were dealing with issues that were interesting to me, and that no other on-campus organization was addressing.  I wasn't going to these events so I could "make a mockery" of their club, and I'm glad they let me hang around from time to time.

Additional thought:  I would think that even if an atheist did join a religious group, he'd still have to adhere to basic rules of behavior for the group, yes?  So if the meeting starts with a group prayer, and the atheist spent the whole prayer shouting "GOD IS FAKE", he could still be kicked out for not adhering to the group's rules, right?  And it would have nothing to do with atheism, it'd be because he's a jerk.  So I don't see how this will suddenly force groups to accept disruptive assholes.  You can always kick someone out of an organization for being a disruptive asshole.

Liatris, I'm pretty sure protected classes have to be minorities, and sadly, "stupid" isn't a minority.  ;-P
