  • Well his tune has certainly changed in a year.

Good for him, although I side eye the timing.  He has always said it was a states issue, so with all this controversy surrounding the issue, and it being an election year, I dont know.  I dont trust it.

I immediately thought this was for re-election also.

If it's not, then good for him.

I am also glad he said this, but shiit man, work on your timing!  Monday woud've been faboo.

ETA: From the article, said by Romney, "Well, when these issues were raised in my state of Massachusetts, I indicated my view, which is I do not favor marriage between people of the same gender, and I do not favor civil unions if they are identical to marriage other than by name," he said. "My view is the domestic partnership benefits, hospital visitation rights, and the like are appropriate but that the others are not."

WTF??? Waffle much?  You either support it or you don't.  None of this, only in this case bullshiit.  Guess who's not getting my vote.  (surprised?)

  • I don't even think it really matters about the timing. The words have been spoken, and that's what's going to matter more to a lot of people.

  • I am too! I guess I am just with Blue here about the timing of it. Although- I won't give a day about his reversal if he actually DOES something about it. I hate flip flopping but I can understand that opinions genuinely evolve and change. Perhaps he has really had a change in perspective and even if his timing is political, his message may be real. None of it really matters if he is able to hasten change.

  • I am not sure it is a slam dunk for his re-election.  Gay marriage is still a pretty hot-button issue that a lot of people continue to be in disagreement over.  NC voted just yesterday to ban gay marriage and lots of other states have such restrictions.  So I think a fair number of people may be pretty upset by it.

I'm not one of those people, though.  I think it's great.

  • I dont think its a slam dunk either AATB, but my friends in the gay community, even my gay republican friends say that they will vote for a Dem who is truly for gay marriage, and people underestimate the power of the gay vote.  They have a lot of money and are very smart.  They will throw that money at their cause.

F'real.  I think he and his team are smart enough to know that this could very well push away some of his supporters.  Especially those among the Christian black community.  I'm glad he said the words.  I don't give a sh*t about the timing.

  • Is it really going ot help with reelection? I mean, wasn't it like 60% of NC that voted for the ban? Sure, it could help gain one demographic, but lose a lot of other votes in the process.

I'm glad he said it. It was pretty gutsy, IMO. The waffling is much easier to do.
  • I think what you're saying definitely has merit, Blue.  I am just interested to see how this all plays out!

  • Plus, the states and people who are going to be pissed about it most likely are not Democrats and would never vote for him anyway.

  • This stands to hurt him more than help.  Most people that are pro-gay marriage (at least to the point where it affects how they vote) vote overwhelmingly Democrat anyways.  Especially when picking between one who's at least for civil unions.  He could have stuck with that.

He stands to lose a lot of support among the religious minority population.  Black preachers are going to freak out about this.  Hispanics tend towards Catholicism (I believe that's a big reason why Prop 8 in California didn't pass, because of the high Catholic Hispanic population and their high turnout).

I really don't see this giving him a re-election boost except from the types of people who would vote for him anyway. If anything it could hurt him. I know in MD one the biggest groups in opposition to gay marriage is black church leaders. That's a group he had behind him last time around.

I'm super excited about it though. We may have to do some celebrating at the gay bar tonight.

To me this is a straight up civil rights issue and i don't see how it should be left to the states or allowed to be voted on by the majority. That's a wee bit off topic though.

I can say this from personal experience with the religious population. I was in NC this weekend and attended Mass. The bishops sent a letter to be read in each church about how Catholics should vote and it was the discussion at dinner later. The entire dinner party was discussing how they would vote "with the Church" and that had a big effect on them.
  • I was just talking to my gay republican friend about this and this is what he had to say about it:

" thats because nc banned same sex marriage yesterday and the polls show its not what the majority of residents of nc wanted. nc is a major swing state that he needs to win so smart move"

I told you my gay friends are smart, lol.

But where were they at the polls? And will they vote in November? People might say it's nto what they wanted, but if it were such a big issue that it would swing their vote for the presidential election, I don't understand why they didn't have a bigger turnout yesterday.

It was long, too. (side note--it was funny for me, because the guy reading it was obviously a transplant from my area and at first I was excited to hear a familiar accent).  In the end, though, I wasn't surprised at the church for going with it because that's their thing. I AM pissed at people who can't separate their religious practices from laws that affect many people, though.

I honestly don't know if the vote here would have changed if Obama had declared his support for same sex marriage on Monday, or last week, or last year. If anything, I think it may have motivated even more people who are against it to get to the polls and vote.  Who knows, though.
