I'm super weirded out by the fact that in some places you can't buy beer at a grocery store. I was all WHAT-WHAT-WHAAAAT?! in the Kyle's Mom voice when my fiance told me that you can't buy beer at a supermarket in Pennsylvania. As you can probably tell, I've only lived in Ohio ...

• In Alaska the grocery stores can't sell alcohol. I was shocked when I went to school in SC and saw alcohol just sitting out i nthe stores.
• Russian Tea room or the Ritz?

Massachusetts only has beer and wine in SOME grocery stores (::shakes fist!::) I miss that about New Hampshire, everybody sold booze, including Walmart.

• It's interesting that this whole thing comes up every couple of months. From my vantage point as an anarchist who's pretty much off the charts leftist-wise, I've seen lots of political discussions that seem to be pretty evenly matched. I can think of a lot of people who identify as some variant of leftist/liberal/Democrat, and plenty who identify as conservative/libertarian/Republican. For the most part it seems that people are pretty socially liberal, but it seems like that's more of an age trend than anything else, and it's happening in both parties nationwide. Whenever there's a political discussion going on, I see viewpoints with which I agree, and others with which I disagree.

But the Democrats really love their guns, and they are against gay rights, and a lot of them are pro-life. So, they're basically Republicans that want more unions.

• Ang, one word for you in re:  Utah - MOAB. You must go. The sig pic I used to have in the blue coat? That's Moab. I don't think it's on this computer. It is my profile pic on FB though.
Off-roading, hiking, mountain biking, ATVing, dirt biking, rafting - you name it. There's a huge Jeep Rally around Easter time each year. Also, there's Arches and Canyonland to hike in. Amazing place.

There's something liquor-wise about taking drinks from the bar to your table at dinner. They have to be separate somehow - at least in the county where Moab is.

They don't have caffeine anymore? Then what is the point?! Those things were like crack.
In Response to Re: Political makeup of the board : You can buy beer at the grocery store in NY, but not liquor or any wine that's better than Arbor Mist. (I guess it's not really wine.) Also, you can buy alcohol anywhere before noon on Sunday. I walked into the grocery store in CA and there were vodka bottles sitting on the shelves and I was like, "Ahhhhhhh" (cue voice from heaven).
Posted by msmerymac
Yeah we were up in upstate NY for a wedding last year and wanted some wine back at the hotel room since the wedding was kind of a bust. But it was only Arbor Mist for us! :(

Do other states have beverage barns/party barns/drive-thrus/whatever you call them? You pull into the drive-thru and tell the people working there what you want (they usually sell beer, cigarettes, and snacks) and they bring it out to you in your car. It's sort of awesome.

I know!  I think there was some issue about there being caffeine and alcohol in the same drink.  It definitely lost its crack-like appeal, the taurine and ginseng just aren't enough.  :(
• I am pretty sure that my mother thinks I am a communist.  But whatever.  I do, however, fully support being able to buy liquor at the grocery store and think that 7-11 should sell  booze too.

When I was getting my MPH, I started the official group of Democrats in my grad school.  We all joked that we didn't have one because most public health people are actually communist, so we weren't far left enough :).
• I think I may be radical even among my pinko humanities grad student friends, so I pretty much sit and rock back and forth in the corner and keep my mouth shut. :)
