old, new, borrowed, blue, silver sixpense in her shoe...

So I saw several postings on the something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue so it got me curious to look into it a little bit.  My mom always tried to get a current year's penny for family members when they got married to put in their left shoe, and I never understood why, utnil I just now looked up that saying...it ends "and a silver sixpense in her shoe".  So I went online and bought an authentic silver sixpense on ebay for $3.75 with shipping and handeling.  so Check, I have that.  I have my grandma's wedding gown that I was going to cut up into garters and hankies for my cousin and I, but now I don't think I have the heart to cut it up.  So, I think my something old is the rings/diamonds.  We melted down his grandparent's and dad's rings to have gold to have our rings custom made, and the daimonds are coming out of the same pieces...and my diamond in my engagement ring is out of my grandmother's engagement ring.  so I have something Old, and a silver sixpense.  I think I have a good start....now just for the new, borrowed and blue.  I think I am going to have my mom embroider a hankie for me with some blue thread.

  • New can be your dress or shoes. Borrowed: something from someone who is happily married (bracelet, earrings, etc.). A lot of brides choose to have blue on their garter, shoes, or underwear.
  • my mom got me a vintage hankie for my old, a light blue garter for my blue, and then gave me the sixpence she had for her wedding.  She gave them all to me at my shower 2 weeks ago, and I got all choked up about the sixpence.  She'd enclosed a note with the story of how she got it. My bridesmaid had to read it aloud for everyone because I knew I couldn't make it through it.  I'm getting choked up about it now!

  • I got a silver sixpence at Renaissance Faire for about $3.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • For my something old I have a small string of pearls that my mom gave me when I turned 18.  My dad had given them to her many years ago.  I also have a necklace that my Pop Pop bought for me the day I was born.  It's just a little gold cross, but I was my Pop Pop's first little girl and he sang "Thank Heavens for Little Girls" in the hospital and went out and got me the little necklace.  I didn't get to have it until I turned 16 and I cried because it had a note from my Pop Pop who had passed away 4 years earlier.

For my something new, I was going to count my dress.  If that doesn't count, maybe I'll get a new hankerchief.

I absolutely love my something blue.  I am a HUGE Disney fan and Stitch is my favorite character (who happens to be blue).  I got two Stitch pins that I'm going to put on my garters.  I also have blue eys and blue bridesmaiddresses and most likely there will be some blue flowers, so blue is well covered...

The something borrowed, I have no clue, but I will look for the six pence at the Ren Faire this fall.

I asked the five women close to me to pick one part of the tradition.

    Mom-Sixpence from her wedding
GMA-blue charm that she had on her wedding day
Nana- pearls from Saudi Arabia that she brought back when she used to live there.  I used them as a bracelet
FMIL-jewelery that she bought on a recent trip to China.
SIL-Gold bracelet that she wore on her wedding day.
