Snarky Brides

Okay. I have a question.

Kind of a P&R, will try and check back later but I'm honestly curious.

My high school mascot was Satan.  As in - "Go Satans Go!" and "Satans Victory!" and etc, etc.  The year after I graduated the school board voted to change the mascot and then a year later, they were the Firebirds and a TON of people were really pissed off.  They kept saying how people shouldn't be offended because it's "just a name," and the cheerleaders were all depressed because they had to re-write their cheers.  Some people touted the "separation of church and state" argument in defense of the name but that was lame, because Satan is still a religious figure so uh, yeah.  Nice try.

Me?  I was fine with it.  I never really liked the name.  We played against some teams that were the Devils, or Demons, but those names didn't bug me.  Satans did.  Admittedly, I grew up in a Christian home and I'm still a believer - devils and demons are one thing, but actual Satan is like, well, yeah, it's a big deal.  I mean, I wasn't going to school every day and praying all day long that Satan wouldn't get me, I never staged any protests and I didn't make a big deal about it while I was going to school but, but it still bothered me.

A FB friend of mine is organizing her Class of 01' reunion and is "bringing back" the mascot and having all these T-shirts and stuff made up with the old logo, and people are so excited about it and I'm just sitting here thinking, "I hope they don't bring him back for our reunion next year."

Am I completely lame for being a little offended?  I mean, if Satan does come to my high school reunion next summer then I'm obviously not going to freak out, not go and mope about it.  I just won't get any of the merchandise or whatever.  But am I lame?  And am I a little insensitive in my thoughts that my old classmates should really just let it go?

Re: Okay. I have a question.

  • I'm not really into mascots, but I think "Satan" as a mascot is particularly lame and awkward on a whole lot of levels.
    image
  • How the hell did they get Satan approved as a mascot in the first place?? (pun intended.)
  • I still can't over that the cheerleaders had to do things like,

"2-4-6-8, who do we appreciate? SATAN!"

(still here) I dunno, Steph.  It was like 90 years ago when the name was picked.

ETA - It kinda goes with the name of my hometown, though.  Devils Lake.  People thought it was cute or something.

Yah, this is my question, too.  Who thought it would be a good idea to root for Satan?

I guess if I had grown up with it, I'd be like you.  It would bother me, but not enough to really make a big fuss about--probably just not get the tee-shirts.  I'd be weird about it, too.
  • We're the Sun Devils, which I guess could bother people but I never really thought much of it.  But straight up SATAN?  That's just weird.

(...still still here)  A couple years ago I was at one of my sister's volleyball games and one of the ladies behind me said something like "I can't believe they ever changed the name from the Satans.  I'll always be a Satan!"

I think that is straight up weird.

I'm not religious at all so I'm offended by it, but it would definitely make me pause and go "WTF?  Satan?"  I can see why they changed it but I don't really see why they OMG NEED TO BRING IT BACK!  Unless you really really love tradition, really really hate censorship or have a thing for Satan.

ETA: Actually, I would usually always count myself in the "hates censorship" category and I still don't get the need to bring it back.  WTF?
  • That is a weird mascot.  Changing mascots is always a big deal though, people get upset over everything.

This thread reads like a skit on SNL, instead of Spartans, it's Satans!

Weird mascot to begin with, but it was what it was. I don't think trying to bring it back and relive your HS days as you remember them is a bad thing though, just nostalgia.

  • Yeah that is really strange that the mascot was ever Satan in the first place.

This. But I can't say how I would feel about it if my old mascot was satan.

Our mascot was Jaguars, and I think if they changed it, when we had a reunion I would definitely want to have MY mascot, not the new ones...but I can't say for certain that I would have that feeling about Satan being my mascot.

  • I think it's really freaking wierd that they had Satan as their mascot.

</div><div>See, I read it more as "We'll stick it to this new mascot and show you what US SATANS ARE ALL ABOUT!" than "Let's make it like we remember it!" since AATB included the info about the controversy in changing it.  I could be wrong though.  If they are just trying to bring it back for nostalgias sake then I agree with you.

  • So I didn't grow up in a Christian house at all but am Christian now and I get why it bugs you but it wouldn't bug me...but I am also not very offended/careful about my blasphemy either...I say OMG too much (I try to correct myself) and I do have a really bad habit of saying JC, especially for someone who is supposed to love Him and all...but I do really get why you wouldn't like it, I mean really, not that one should idolize anything really (if one is Christian that is), if you had to choose, Satan shouldn't really be your top pick.

I started working at my current school when it first opened and we had to pick a mascot...our initials are HV...so of course we started with animals/people/groups with those letters - I was a big proponent of the Vikings but 'apparently' they should be remembered for raping and pillaging many other groups and people didn't feel that was appropriate for a public school. I thought that was ridiculous. We are the Huskies. I hate being a dog.
  • I definitely think there's a reason they changed it. And I think more people share your thoughts than not. Otherwise they wouldn't have changed it.

This reminds me that the Buffalo Sabres used to havea hockey player named Miroslav Satan, pronounced Sha-TAN. Woohoo! We have Satan on our side!

At my reunion there really wasn't a big resurgence of our mascot. I mean, the reception was in the school gym and they had the mascot up, along with some awards and the gym is decorated in our school colors (the gators - green and white), but that was about it.

My college mascot is the Bombers, which I think is dumb, but they did it post-WWII when a lot of ex-military were attending the school on the GI bill (including my mom's father). They're trying to come up with a new logo FOR the mascot, but not changing it.

  • Do people ever make a big deal about the Cleveland Indians being the Indians? We teach our kids at school not to use the terms Indian or Native but rather the term Aboriginals or First Nations. I don't know if it's similar in the states. Of course, where I live and work we have massive numbers of immigrants so we have plenty of Indians, but they are actually from India.

We haven't had a reunion yet. But I know that my Mom's reunions usually consist of attending a football game Friday and then a family picnic/sit down dinner on Saturday (We graduated from the same district, my school isn't old enough to have reunions yet).

Numbers- I don't think there's anything wrong with the Cleveland Indians personally. But the mascot is also a Native American, so it portrays the meaning I think.
But, that reminded me that the Tampa Bay Rays, had to change their name from the Tampa Bay DevilRays because of people didn't like it because it had "devil" in it. I thought that was a little bit ridiculous....

That one was a great pun LessThan. Our mascot was the Beaver in HS.it was halarious but embaressing @ the same time  The cheerleaders chanting "We are Beavers!!" "Go Beaver's Go!" I can totaly understand not liking yours, makes mine  look a bit more angelic for ages 14-18.
  • I guess I'd understand the nostalgia part if there wasn't a full on "vengeance" feel to it.  I mean people actually say that they'll "always be Satans," and there's even a shop in town that still sells Satans merchandise (the place is run by an older woman who apparently can't let things go).  The vibe is just weird.

And yes number, there are people out there who do make a big deal about the Cleveland Indians, and also the Washington Redskins, etc.  My college teams are the Fighting Sioux, and it is being changed.
