Kind of a P&R, will try and check back later but I'm honestly curious.
My high school mascot was Satan. As in - "Go Satans Go!" and "Satans Victory!" and etc, etc. The year after I graduated the school board voted to change the mascot and then a year later, they were the Firebirds and a TON of people were really pissed off. They kept saying how people shouldn't be offended because it's "just a name," and the cheerleaders were all depressed because they had to re-write their cheers. Some people touted the "separation of church and state" argument in defense of the name but that was lame, because Satan is still a religious figure so uh, yeah. Nice try.
Me? I was fine with it. I never really liked the name. We played against some teams that were the Devils, or Demons, but those names didn't bug me. Satans did. Admittedly, I grew up in a Christian home and I'm still a believer - devils and demons are one thing, but actual Satan is like, well, yeah, it's a big deal. I mean, I wasn't going to school every day and praying all day long that Satan wouldn't get me, I never staged any protests and I didn't make a big deal about it while I was going to school but, but it still bothered me.
A FB friend of mine is organizing her Class of 01' reunion and is "bringing back" the mascot and having all these T-shirts and stuff made up with the old logo, and people are so excited about it and I'm just sitting here thinking, "I hope they don't bring him back for our reunion next year."
Am I completely lame for being a little offended? I mean, if Satan does come to my high school reunion next summer then I'm obviously not going to freak out, not go and mope about it. I just won't get any of the merchandise or whatever. But am I lame? And am I a little insensitive in my thoughts that my old classmates should really just let it go?
