[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Morning : I agree with JCB on a second opinion. I recently changed my cats food, because he was constantly hungry and he would puke it back up after he scarfed it down. What I have him on now has much better ingredients, that he stays full longer and doesnt whine for food as much. He still has fuballs that cause spit up, but not food. Stick to your guns about the food. <strong>Does he give you a reason why his food is supposed to be SO much better?

Something about this diet encouraging Eli to drink more water, which in turn will help his bladder issues. Okay, the logic makes sense, but why can't I feed a high quality wet cat food that's loaded with real meat (and not corn, beaks and ass) and maybe even add a tbsp or two of water to his food to encourage the extra consumption? Not one vet has come up with a reason why that's not a viable option, so I'm not letting go yet. Instead, they push anti-spasmodic drugs (which I'm open to, on a very short-term basis) and push their big money vet food on me, which irritates the shiit out of me.

Sorry, guys. I feel like my sick-kitty rage is spilling out here a lot lately. I appreciate you letting me vent.

ETA: oh, Edie. :( I'm sorry about your parents' kitty. Kidney failure is the worst.

ETA2: for those who asked, it's the Purina UR ST/OX diet. This is the last urinary diet option we had (he threw all the others up) and it's a failure too, so...I'm lost.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Morning : Sorry, jcb - I just saw this now. This is actually the third vet that he's seen. We belong to "The Cat Clinic" here in town, which has a feline specialist on staff and several other cat-only vets. It's kind of like a family practice for humans, and has been such a help in the past. In this case, they kind of all seem to be drinking the Kool-Aid when it comes to the vet-diets, and don't seem to understand my concerns about the actual nutritional value of the stuff. I mean, one glance at the labels and I'm disgusted by what's in there, so why would I feed it to my sick cat? The only vet I've been unable to see is the specialist, since she was out of town on a conference. I'm hoping to touch base with her this week to see what she thinks about this new medication/food combo. I'm sick of spending money on things to pump into him when none of them seem to be treating the actual problem.

  • Edie, I'm sorry about your parents kitty. :(  That's sad, even if they aren't a cuddly kitty, it's still like family.

I had a shiity Easter.  Had a girls night on Friday night with some friends, and one of us decided to bring some food poisoning to the gathering, so all of us ended up spending Easter puking our guts out. Today is a better day, in that I can hold down food now, so I'm off to work on my last 2 centerpieces for the wedding.

And I missed all the troll pics, but I'm glad I did.  WTF is wrong with people?

I'm sorry but this made me giggle.

Last year, we ended up on NYE at the emergency vet clinic till 4AM for the same things. After that and several visits to our vet it turned out he had an infection (first doc said was stressed), anyway we invested in a drinking fountain for him to encourage him to drink more. Best money spent ever. But, not once did they suggest changing foods.

KD - he was diagnosed with urinary struvite crystals just over a week ago. He couldn't really pee properly and was dribbling here and there. He wasn't blocked with crystals, but wasn't flushing them out as fast as they'd like. They explained the dribbling like the urgency we feel when we have a UTI - we have to pee so bad and yet, there's not much there to pee out, and that his bladder was inflamed. He's been getting better and peeing way more, but he's still not peeing 100% properly. The vet today thought that he might still be having some kind of urethral spasms (ouch) which can prevent the crystals from being flushed out, so she recommended a short round of anti-spasmodics again, and the stupid vet diet.

ETA: We have a fountain too, KD. Toby drinks from it and loves it, but Eli prefers to drown his toys in it and occasionally wash his paws in there. He's resisting me on all fronts, these days!
  • jcb - you know what? Canned chicken might do it for now. I'd be willing to give it a shot, if only to get something into him with moisture in it...

HA! We were worried about that too, but it's been a great investment. He's just being a brat.

  • I don't know, I can see both sides of the vet issue. On the one hand, I understand wanting to feed your cat only a high-quality diet, but on the other, if the cat is starving and he'll eat the vet food, then at some point you need to suck it up and go that route, even if only temporarily.

A lot of those foods are made to address specific issues (like with Whisky, he was given a very bland food because at the time, that's all he could handle). It wasn't what I preferred him to eat, but it's what saved his life. It only takes a few days of cats not eating for their livers to start shutting down and cause irreversible damage.

We give Whisky people food sometimes, but you have to be careful since a lot of things are bad for them.

I totally agreed. I bought a case of the wet food and a bag of the kibble because I thought he'd eventually eat it, and I'd be able to slowly wean him onto a better diet again. He wouldn't touch it after the initial can he ate (and threw up) so we have to try something else to make sure we avoid the hepatic lipidosis issue.
