When do you change your Social Media Last Name?

We all know you can't officially change your name until you receive your marriage certificate but with your Facebook, Twitter, Skype, LinkedIn you can change it whenever you like but what is the proper way to do it and when?

I would change it after the wedding sometime. There is no rush with social media. I know people that never changed their name on facebook after they legally changed it.

Oooh congratulations, you're so close. I'm not married yet but I plan on changing my Facebook name ASAP. The next day most likely. Most people I know have done this.

I don't think there's a right or a wrong way. If you plan on changing your name post wedding, just change your name on your social media sites post wedding. Whenever. I did mine the day after the wedding but didn't get on the official name changing train for a couple weeks post wedding. It's not that big of a deal. If you change your name on your Facebook before changing it at the Social Security office and DMV, it doesn't mean you won't get your mail or something.

I didn't legally change my last name. I did add my husband's last name as my middle name on Facebook (yes, totally weird... but I oddly like it that way for something like Facebook). I did that about 9 months after the wedding, though.

Just don't whip out your phone at the altar and change your name. I'd seriously judge your idiocy.

I don't think there is a proper way, but I think the people that change it before they're married just look ridiculous.

The only one I would care about changing is LinkedIn, and that's just because I use it a TON for work. But I would wait until you change your name in the company (email and whatnot) so people can find you. Which most people i know it takes like a year to change everything in corporate haha.

Not sure why any of the other sites would really matter though. I could change my name to Queen Elizabeth right now, if I wanted.

I will change mine after the wedding when I have time. FI and I leave for the honeymoon 2 days after the wedding and my family is coming in from Germany so we plan to spend some time with them the day after the wedding.

I actually never changed my LinkedIn name. But I work in media and still "use" my maiden name, so people still know me professionally that way. Lol.

I'm having a small wedding and none of my professional network knows I am getting married.

And the only reason I was thinking of changing it now is because I know a lot would like to purchase me a gift because I was a birthday party coordinator at a previous job and always did nice things for others.

This was exactly what went through my head when I read the OP. Because, obviously, on the altar right after I Do is the ONLY way to go.

OP, this isn't a big deal. If your main concerns are work-related, I'd do everything at once -- change your e-mail, e-mail signature, etc. and then do your social media stuff. I'd be more concerned about trying to orchestrate the name change on the legal documents in my life (bank, credit cards, SSN, driver's license, health insurance, life insurance, etc. etc. etc.) than whether my LinkedIn was up to date. But, whatevs.

ETA: Having Eagles bold the birthday party coordinator language makes it so much funnier.

I just want to clarify when I gave my advice about LinkedIn, it was so people in the corporate world could still find you, I knew NOTHING of the present expectations at the time!!

OP....I think people would probably *want* to provide you with a gift after being invited to the wedding, not send you one after seeing a profile name change.

I changed my FB name the morning after the wedding, because H wanted to sleep in and I was wide awake and bored.

I'd recommend waiting until after your honeymoon for this reason: after I did it, I was flooded with people saying "OMG WHAT ARE YOU DOING ONLINE? SHOULDN'T YOU BE...DOING SOMETHING?" Well, hubs is sleeping and I'm not, but please, continue to publically infer that I should be having sex 24/7, I'm sure my dad loves seeing that when he logs on to FB.

I don't really know what changing your name has to do with gifts anyway. Do your co-workers not know exactly who they are unless they see your name or something? Do you have to wear a name tag at work? You should probably change your name on your name tag asap.
