Re: FFF

• I found a review of HG from D Magazine that does a really good job of summing up the issues that I had with the movie.  I still really liked it, and I won't share because I know a lot of you haven't seen it, but I'm glad to know it wasn't just I who thought things were a bit off.  I also think my expectations were really high (like, I was having HG-themed dreams leading up to yesterday), so it was hard to meet them.
oh, and hello from the abyss! I haven't been around in awhile, and things seem really quiet here and on the nest. also, stephie, <strong>your wedding pictures were gorgeous</strong>, so don't have too many regrets about your bridesmaid dresses. i don't think most people expect to be able to wear their dresses again, and they can always buy another LBD anytime.

Awww, thank you so much.  I still cringe a little when I see those dresses though!  I don't know what I was thinking.
• Ok! I feel really stupid for not knowing anything about The Hunger Games. I asked my daughter and she really didn't either. So I'm thinking maybe I need to look into this thing..lol...So google here I come.

I just got into it 2-3 weeks ago, and breezed through book one over a weekend when I had nothing to do. I am about 10% through book 2, but have just been busy. I was so hesitant to read this cause (don't flame me) I don't get the whole Harry Potter/LOTR/Twilight craziness, but I am enjoying this series.
In Response to Re: FFF : <strong>Would the professor just refuse to answer your questions or what? </strong>I know that professors can get in trouble for advising a student to drop so maybe he was worried if he said your grade wasn't recoverable it would be like telling you to drop or if he told you it was recoverable and it ended up not being then he would feel like he gave you bad advice? I'm not saying I doubt he was an ass about it, he probably was, but can you look at your syllabus and figure out your average on your own, or is there other information you need from him?
Posted by nickandmerritt
All he would tell me was "Your grades could be better". Well, That I knew.  <div>
</div><div>I asked him if it was a school rule that he couldn't give me any advice (This is only my second semester at the school). I explained that to him, I was not trying to argue or anything and I get back: "I don't know that it's a school rule, but It's (insert professor last name here) rule." The tone was just really ass-hole-ish. I get his concern but seriously "Your grades could be better" doesn't help me. </div><div>
</div><div>Oh well. </div>

I still have a week to decide, and I'll probably just take a summer class to keep me on track for grad.

This is such a lame-o question but would you recommend reading the review if you haven't seen the movie? I've read the books so I can't REALLY be spoiled... but I feel like I can be movie-spoiled!

Just gotta give a little love to HP... out of all of those series, Harry Potter to me is the most worth the time to read. Every book just keeps getting better and better, and I kind of felt like the opposite with HG.
And Twilight, I don't even know... I read the first book before any of the movies were even in production and I STILL thought it was pretty lame and gaggy. Once the movies came out my feelings were only further confirmed.

I mean, sure.  I don't think it really spoils anything.  It's at least nice to see that perspective, and maybe it would help you sort of understand what they're going for.  It's called, "Why Nothing in the Hunger Games Ever Feels Quite Real," and it talks about the characters more than anything.  And it's not the fault of the actors, either.  I just had a really weird feeling coming out, and the review really hits on everything I thought.

Here's the link, if you want:
<a rel="nofollow" href="http://frontrow.dmagazine.com/2012/03/movie-review-why-nothing-in-the-hunger-games-ever-feels-quite-real/">http://frontrow.dmagazine.com/2012/03/movie-review-why-nothing-in-the-hunger-games-ever-feels-quite-real/</a>

ETA: The review is also written as though the author never read the book, which I both like and dislike.

• Confession: I have never read HP.  It seemed really silly to me when it first came out, and then I just never got around to reading it.  I've also refused to see the movies, because I'd prefer to read the books first.  I'm sure I'll get to it.

As for Twilight, I think the first book came out my first year teaching, and I was so excited because it seemed like all my students were reading and that is awesome.  And then some of my coworkers started talking about how good it was.  So, wanting to be up on all the hip new jive, I picked up a copy at Barnes and Noble and read the description, and immediately put it down.  It just seems so vapid that I thought my brain would explode.

My favorite thing was that my ex-roommate, who regularly rented movies she'd never heard of from Redbox, picked up Twilight one evening, and then later complained to me that she'd watched "The most boring movie ever... This Twilight thing?  Have you heard of it?  DID YOU KNOW IT'S ABOUT VAMPIRES?  How stupid is that?!"

I narrowly missed this fate. I had a coworker who raved and raved about them and she told me she had all 4 books and I could borrow them and I was all, COOL because I just love HP. After I read the first one I was like WTF is this nonsense??? I don't want to read about someone's feelings. It's like going back and reading my junior high diary. Whiny, sulky, and just too pathetic for words. After I returned it I didn't say much because I didn't want to hurt her feelings but the next day she brought me the second book and I had to confess that I would not be needing her book-lending services from thereon out.

Um and AMANDA please please please read HP. Just please. Please.
• I never read any of the HP or Twilight books but being a parent at the time of pre-teen and teenage daughter's I got drug to the movies and not a fan of either. With this last Twilight movie I got drug to the midnight showing. This is how great of a Mom I am ...lol..That's way past my bedtime. Luckily it was an ok movie and I stayed awake.
