I get the flu shot because I've seen people get the flu and it did not look like fun. And I've never had the flu. But I don't get the flu shot religiously and I didn't get it last season and I didn't get the flu.

And I agree with Marissa about being proactive about your care with doctors. I always ask questions and make sure that what I am doing is the best decision for me.

I think the whole 3-D trend is dumb. I went to see my first 3-D movie last weekend and I def thought that it was overrated. I don't like wearing glasses, hence the reason that I wear contacts. I kept on taking the glasses off to give me a break. Forget the fact that it is an extra $3 just to see one. We went on a friday night and spent $25 for just the two of us. I think I will go back to my $5 matinee 2-D movies please!

TNickel - You stole the words straight out of my mouth!!!  I was about to say that 3D movies make me nauseous.

I get the whole kids movie ones, that's okay by me.  But Step Up 3?  Ridiculous.

I'm sad that pretty soon all movies will probably be this way.   I even saw an article yesterday .. something about 3D home televisions are going to be the next craze.

OMG Step Up in 3D was tooootally unnecessary!!! There was like 7 things the entire movie that was 3d. And 3 of them were the match names! Just a way to charge more and I only saw it in theaters because Gypsy(dance director of the dance company I was on previously) wanted to go see it...we thought we were going to making fun of it hehehehe

The dance scene in the water was definitely my favorite though!! The dancing was MUCH better than the previous ones! Made me want to get back in the studio asap! LOL Unfortunately that isn't happening semester Frown

AND studio movie grill has $5 morning matinee's...go to a morning show and it's only $5! We only go to those movies now when we want to go see something in theaters. usually much quieter in the theater too.

I had my first Swine flu and Flu shot together last year! It was almost required at work since we work in a high risk environment. I didn't get the flu, either of them, and I *knock on wood* haven't had it yet. Different people will react different to all kinds of medications. This is what makes Doctors jobs so hard, but you have to understand the flu shot is normally made to protect you against one strain of the flu not all. So you might catch another strain even though you got a flu shot. If this makes sense.

I'm with Marissa on the patient education!! You should know no matter what it is why you doctor is recommending things to you. If it doesn't make sense ask questions. We have a ton of patients that have surgeries and are taking medication and they have no clue why. You should know why. It doesn't mean it's not needed but there might be other options for you. Just be informed.

    I AGREE!!!!!

I wear glasses, because I cant wear contacts... Have you ever tried watching a movie with #D glasses over regular eyeglasses?  Its ridiculous!
I haven't had a chance to see 3 movies this summer, because when I finally had the time, and I went up there, all they had was 3D

Could this be discrimination?  My eyesight could be considered a disability. LOL

By successful birth I mean that everyone comes out fine with no major complications... and if you have to have a c-section for your own health or the health or your child, then other people's opinions on the matter (or even your own) shouldn't make a difference... its ultimately about doing what's best for the health and well being of the baby... and the mom.

I'm not saying that you, yourself, should be one of the "who cares" people... its obviously your own body and your own beliefs.  My point is WHO CARES what other people think??  I had an epidural, I didn't have a c-section... and I make no apologies or explanations for it.

No, I totally get that, I just don't like that it goes both ways "How dare she have an epidural" vs. "Look at the crazy hippie lady who did a homebirth." I would argue that there is a good chance that not all decisions made during pre-natal care and birth are done with the total best interest of the mother and baby at heart. That's just the reality of an overstressed medical system scared of an overly-litigious society. I do have bias--I was born is a hospital with a midwife and the rest of my 4 siblings were born at home (3 with a doctor who did home births and 1 with a midwife)--I absolutely HATE It when people say things that would imply my mom is a hippie idiot because the woman knows more about it and chose to research it much more than most mothers out there. Haha, for the record, she said giving birth at home naturally was much better than the hospital, because she could labor however she wanted, eat want she wanted, and even have her kiddos around as much as she wanted. For her, the hospital was just stressful and made some major errors with me that came close to forcing her to have a c-section, which would have obviously hampered her ability to have 4 more children.

She was in  labor for 36 hours with me and says she is so thankful to the nurse who checked her and told her to go home, because she could stay and labor there, but she could guarantee they would want to induce and she'd end up with a c-section.

I also did my senior thesis for history on midwivery and the move to obstetricians, etc. It is absolutely fascinating to read about the statistics and birthing setups of other nations. Sadly, the US is not on top...

But I don't begrudge anyone who wants a hospital birth, epidural, etc. Just don't judge those who choose a different way either.

I am having SMIL in there with us because she used to be a midwife as my birthing coach. I don't know if I would be brave enough to do a home birth but I also have no desire to try natural so that may be a reason. I did do a little research on doulah's and midwives and am so happy that SMIL used to be a midwife and offered to help as I really wanted someone to help me with the labor part so my husband wouldn't have to have that stress on him as well.

But please give me the drugs! LOL

Similarly and in a real life situation, I wouldn't either... to each their own.

Marissa - The way I read the new recommendations, they're trying to encourage more patient education and offering more options for women rather than just saying that you must have another c-section if you've already had one. I'm sure it will take a long time to implement this, but at least women can point to it if they're trying to fight for a VBAC.

On another note - have you read The Babycatcher? I loved that book!

Anna, no I haven't! But I just got myself a shiny new library card, so I will look into it!
