Re: A travel poll

  • Best place you've ever visited (and why): TBH? Mexico is my favorite. We always go to Puerto Vallarta. It's cheap, safe, FANTASTIC weather...awesome food.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  Disney - if you haven't gone, you should. Or 6 Flags in San Antonio.

Worst place: CUBA. I WILL NEVER GO BACK.

Place(s) on your dream travel list: Hawaii and Greece, I'd lik to go back to Poland one day too.

Of course! I thought that was implied :)

And I can think of plenty of places that bored me to tears and Minneapolis isn't one of them.

Best place you've ever visited (and why): I haven't traveled much yet, but I love Savannah, Georgia and I took a really fun trip to Canada with my HS BF's family.  Savannah is just a beautiful city; I love the tree lined streets and the squares and all of the neat shops and restaurants.  The Canada trip was fun because we stayed on a beautiful lake and fished and snorkeled all week.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  Definitely NOT Niagara Falls.  ::Shudder::

Worst place: Hilton Head, South Carolina.  I don't golf.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:  So many...Italy, Greece, and Spain.  New Orleans.  Maine.  Alaska.  Etc...

EDIT: Because I can't spell Niagara Embarassed
Klove, did you tube down the Apple River? That's an experience that I'm pretty sure I didn't enjoy, but I'm not entirely sure if I did or not.
    Posted by crfische
Yes, we camped and tubed down the river for my sister's bachelorette party. I tried so hard to be a good sport for her, but it was probably the worst weekend ever. Our first night there, everyone was eager to start drinking and tubing so we went around 3pm. Terrible idea. The last hour on the river  happened in the dark, in the cold, and with bats swooping down at us!

No, it just bothers me when people say they DESPISE a city, when they didn't even experience the city, which you clearly didn't. Also, what casino did you go to? There aren't any IN minneapolis that I know of. In the suburbs? Maybe. But again, those aren't MINNEAPOLIS.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  I don't know if this really qualifies as an attraction, but I'm going to say the volcano I visited in Nicaragua
Worst place: Actually there are many things I can't stand about NY
Place(s) on your dream travel list:  Zanzibar and Ireland

  • Actually it's case in point.

I've never been to Minneapolis, but I'm gonna take Fishy's side because I think she's generally a pretty good judge of what is awesome.
Just saw someone was from a city I despise, so I was just curious....

Best place you've ever visited (and why):  I guess I'm fortunate that I love pretty much love all the cities I visited but I love Granada, Spain then Lisbon and Athens.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:   Parc Guell in Barcelona (yes, it's just a park but I love Gaudi's work) The Alhambra in Granada and The Acropolis as well.

Worst place: Hmm these are cities that I like but my first time in Lisbon and first time in London, I stayed in shady hostels so I guess that's my "worst"

Place(s) on your dream travel list:  Argentina/Chile (going there for the HM!), Cuba, Russia, Japan, Switzerland, South Africa and I would love to see the Taj Mahal.

Best place you've ever visited (and why):  Wow, I really don't have one "best" above all others, but some I've loved are: Buenos Aires for the nightlife, San Pedro Atacama for the total other-worldliness of it, Athens because I'm a total classics nerd and love Greek food.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  Machu Picchu

Worst place: I can't think of anywhere that hasn't had at least one redeeming quality, although I didn't really care for Lima.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:  Everywhere. But in the next couple years: Cuba, Colombia, South Africa.

And it's case IN point :)

Best place you've ever visited (and why): I love love LOVED England.  Everything about it.  London for the tourism, York for relaxing.  Everything was beautiful.  Would go back in a heartbeat.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  Tower of London and Westminster Abbey, both in London.  History geek's dream.

Worst place: I had a terrible time in D.C., but that was more EVERYTHING going wrong on the trip.  I'm sure the city itself is beautiful.

Place(s) on your dream travel list:  Ireland, Italy, Scotland, France, US Virgin Islands, and the Bahamas.
Best place you've ever visited (and why): Florence.  It's just... powerful and majestic.  Not in a way that smacks you over the head with opulence, but it's in the air. Favorite attraction you've ever been to: I guess that would be the Colosseum and Palatine Hill? Worst place: Venice.  It's just so sad to me.  It's overrun by tourists.  The flavor that would make it different (people living there) just barely exists.  You can't find a spot that's off the beaten path. Place(s) on your dream travel list:  Iceland, Maldives, Jordan, New Zealand, <strong>Russia
Fezz -- tell me about Antigua...what was your favorite thing?  Where did you stay?
    Posted by jcbsjr
It was goregous.  The weather was amazing.  Despite some storms that came through, which are par for the course.  We stayed at the Sandals Grande Antigua -Carribean Grove location.  I think my favorite thing was the private pool and the food was great which is always big in my book.  I love food.

  • Oh, TR beat me to it.

Also, P2, why'd you hate Cuba? H doesn't really like it because he just hates that you can't talk to the locals very easily and that the typical tourist experience is so sterile (especially if you go to Varadero and just sit on the beach), but I really want to go and see it for myself. He says he'll go back as long as we don't go to Varadero and go somewhere new to him instead.
  • No, but you were the only one who took an attitude about it, and then also insulted the residents of the city by pretty much saying they were smug.

And then inferred that I was from there, which I'm not.

And I'm telling you that your facts are wrong because most of the things you say you saw aren't even IN Minneapolis.

You can not like the city, but don't be a dillhole about it.

I do agree with you that sometimes, one just doesn't like a place, and that's that. Like I got a weird vibe from Florence that I didn't like, probably because it was about two million degrees there. Such is life.

I wouldn't take it too personally that you got singled out, though. I think that once one person expresses a thought that several people have, then it will increase the likelihood that others will express that same thought. Especially if one of those people is Fish. :)

And to make you feel better: I forget who said they didn't like Newark, NJ, but I hope you don't let Newark color your impression of the entire state. Newark is indeed a shithole in a lot of ways, but I don't usually think of it as a "travel" destination.

Favorite attraction you've ever been to:  The pyramids in Egypt or Waipi'o Valley in Hawaii

Worst place: I thought Bourbon St in New Orleans was trashy and overrated.

I can't pinpoint one exact reason exactly. Mostly that I have never felt so un-safe in my life. Not even in grody hostels in Europe did I feel so un-safe. I suppose seeing guards walking around Havana with machine guns maybe sould have made me feel safe, but it didn't. And there were guards at the hotels and markets and everywhere we went. Plus? The locals were fucking creepy, I pretty much ran past every group of men we saw. Most people I know didn't enjoy Cuba either. And then the next people just love it.

  • I'd also like to add Daytona to my worst list. It was dirty DIRTY and just not at all what we expected. We drove around for an hour looking for a reasonable hotel room. None of them were clean so we finally just settled...

It's funny, I was talking to someone last week who went in the spring and they loved it and felt safe everywhere they went.  But they had friends who stayed in a different hotel and had awful experiences.  I wonder if that has something to do with it?  Weird.
