Recommend a Book

I am interested in book recommendations.  Particularly the books you are supposed to read, but never actually did.  For instance, I just finished Lord of the Flies.

Re: Recommend a Book

  • Not a book you were "supposed" to read, but my favorite book is The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.  It's amazing.
  • Far From the Maddening Crowd

    Jane Eyre

  • I feel compelled to read the 4 books (so far) in the Dexter series. They just came in from Amazon yesterday. I wish I had read enough last night to recommend them.

  • "Water For Elephants" was really good.
  • Oh! And Great Expectations! I couldn't put it down!

  • Fifth Business. It's not exactly a tough, involved read, but I loved it.
  • 1984, The Bell Jar, Atlas Shrugged are good classics.

ha! I love what I call "the classics". Everyone looks at me like a nutcase when I tell them I'm re-reading them for fun. I just re-read Gulliver's Travels and White Fang last week. I still love White Fang even though it's slow. Count of Monte Cristo and Huckleberry Finn have always been favorites.

other non-classic faves: Reservation Blues, Like Water For Chocolate, Cat's Cradle, Dropping Ashes on the Buddha, and Go Ask Alice.

  • Harlan Coben is one of my favs.  "The Woods"  "The Innocent" and "Tell No One" are a couple of his best IMO.

Also, if you are looking for comedy, Janet Evanovich writes a series called the Plum Series.  The first book is "One for the Money"  She's on book 16 now, and they are hilarious.

Classics, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Great Expectations are my favorites.

  • Maybe not one you're "supposed" to read, but Confederacy of Dunces brings the awesome. As does "A Prayer for Owen Meany," which I actually have heard about being assigned in some English classes. Also, "All the King's Men," which I've had to read for some college English classes before. AKM is my absolute very very very favorite. My list is heavy on stuff set in Louisiana.

  • I really enjoyed "Jemima J" by Jane Green.

  • I just finished "The Help" and it was really good.  I also really liked The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and the other two books in the trilogy.

My "supposed to read it" book that I'm working on now is Pride and Prejudice.  I feel like my woman card should be revoked because I've tried reading it 3 times in my life already and can never get through it.

  • My supposed-to-read book I'm reading right now is Wuthering Heights, but I don't recommend it.

    Things I like:

    Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
    Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

I also like things by Thomas Hardy and William Faulkner, but they totally aren't for everyone.

  • One of those "supposed to read books" that I actually loved was The Catcher in the Rye.  In college I also read Possession.  That I highly recommend too.

  • I haven't heard of at least half these books. I feel so uneducated.

I love to read so I read all the ones in high school (yes, I'm a nerd). The only book I couldn't get through that I was supposed to read was in college, Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko, which is odd because I love Native American literature. I ended up kicking myself later because I used it for my master's thesis and needed to suffer through it anyway.

I just started reading "The Road." I saw the movie but my brother said the book was really good, so I'm giving it a try.

  • These are ones I was supposed to read in college, didn't, then read them after I graduated and loved each one:
    Jude the Obscure
    Far From the Madding Crowd
    The Moonstone
    To the Lighthouse
    Mansfield Park

Ones that I haven't read, but mean to:
    The Woman in White
    Sense and Sensibility
    The House of the Spirits
Ines of My Soul (in Spanish, eep)
  • J.D. Sallinger has a book of short stories called "Nine Stories" (catchy title there, as the book contains nine stories) that I liked much more than Catcher in the Rye, although I really liked Catcher in the Rye too.

<div>Yeah, re-reading it it's like, Yeah this is still good, but it's not the best of the best masterpiece of all emotions I thought it was when I was 14. It's actually really depressing, whereas the first time I read it I thought it was intriguing and relatable ... I was a weird kid though.</div>

I took a seminar class in college on Jane Austen, mainly because I really liked the professor. I learned my lesson, never take a class just because your a fan of the teacher. The only one I enjoyed was Pride & Prejudice.
