Thinking about marketing myself to do DIY stuff for brides, ideas?

So I just got married on July 24th. It was perfect! I did all DIY stuff from hand painted menus, my own card box, my own table #'s including the pictures of the #'s, hand bent wire and holders, to the decorations, escort cards, invitations and paddle fans with bubbles attached. All homemade. I had so much fun doing this. I got laid off in April from a high stress, anxiety inducing, accounting job. And because of this, I got to do all the DIY stuff and I keep hearing how beautiful my wedding was with all the personal touches. I'm thinking about starting to do these things for other brides, hear what style they want and go to work. I read a few brides "don't have a creative bone in their body" and I think, I can help! I want to help! It's so much fun! I'm 31, have a Studio Arts degree and am thinking of changing careers to something I love doing. I loved this whole process and it was the first time I sat down to paint since I left college.

So my question to you is... would you hire someone to make these things for you, listen to your style ideas, go over options? We can design something together and I make it. I'm open to all ideas. This is just an inquiry, I'm not asking for anyone to hire me. Just asking for thoughts and IF this is something people would go for. Thank you! Meredith

  • I think a lot of brides do DIY because of the budget - it would seem like in order for you to be profitable at this, your products would have to be pretty expensive... There are a lot of people who do custom wedding products (go check out the Etsy wedding section) so there's definitely a market for this type of thing, but my main concern as a bride would be the cost.  Good luck though!  It's nice to hear of someone turning something crappy, like a layoff, into something good, like a job you love :)
  • I've sent you a PM.

  • No offense, but isn't the whole concept of diY... do it youself???  If you pay someone else to do it, it would be diT... do it theselves??  Doesn't make any sense to me.  Sorry
Maybe offering to help brides with their projects or make custom homemade type stuff for them, but I definitely wouldn't call it DIY... it's misleading.

  • It's DIFY! Do It For YOU ! Givng someone the look of customized "look what I did" for someone who doesn't have the time. Or someone who maybe has the time and the ideas but is planning their wedding from out of state or out of the country. That's my situation. I am not currently in the US, so I am getting lots of ideas from the internet. But if I order anything I would send it to my parents house in PA, not my home in FL. I can't afford to ship it twice! So my mock up centerpieces may not be put together until pretty close to the wedding, so its a concern. So I think there is a market. I may not be the typical bride, but I am sure there are others that WANT to create something orginal or different but have circumstances that make it difficult.
  • I agree with pps.

It it not DIY if you pay someone else to do it for you.

Brides usually do DIY to save money, and may not want to pay for it.

There is a huge market for custom wedding stuff, and etsy is a great suggestion for where to sell it!
