How much is yours (if you dont mind sharing)?
Who is it through?
My apartment complex called to remind me they need the info and uh, I kind of don't have any. I can't even afford to get it until I get paid again but I want to get the quotes and have it set up to go.....
Re: Renters insurance
ETA: we also have 2 cars and my ring insured through State Farm, so I'm sure we get some sort of multi-policy discount.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew

I don't know if thats good or not. lol
Question for married ladies, did you get a discount on your insurance (auto or otherwise) when you got married? Just wondering if that's ever a possibility.

[QUOTE]OK that settles it. I'm calling my car insurance place and getting renters insurance. I had no idea it was so cheap. We don't have a lot of money, but I can cover 12 or 20 a month. Our car insurance got considerably cheaper when we got married. Prior to the wedding, DH had crappy coverage through Geico (No comp or collision, very low coverage limits), and I had pretty good coverage through All State (I had comp and collision and pretty high limits). I was paying about $1400, he was paying around $1600 for the year (Got to love those Jersey rates ). He also has 2 tickets and an accident that should be dropping off in another year or so, my record is spotless.
After the wedding, I got us quotes through a few different companies, and Progressive was able to get us great coverage for $2200 for the year.

Stacey, that seems kind of high to me. We're paying $750 a year for homeowners through USAA and it covers a hell of a lot more. We also have our auto and life through them though so I don't know if that keeps dropping it.
Who does everyone have life insurance through? The cheapest quote I can get for Scott (36, smoker) is through Metlife for $120/month for a 30 year term and that seems a bit steep. Whole goes into several hundred per month which we can't afford.

State Farm. We have our house and car insurance through them as well. DH has the highest rating out of the 4 types available and he is paying about $26 a month. It's for 30 years and DH is 28.
ETA: I just looked at a quote we were sent, and the smoker rating for 30 years is $56 a month (lowest rating out of the 4 types). So it seems like yours is a bit high. I'm assuming he isn't insured for a huge amount? Like over 500k?

We'll have to look through State Farm beacuse that sounds great. We just need enough for the house and like, a years wages. So maybe $300,000 at the most
Seshat, Scott's auto insurance dropped a lot after we got married, so did his motorcycle insurance. It dropped even more when we moved out of DC.

[QUOTE]Oh, and I'm not much help on the renter's insurance. I work for an insurance company, but most of the "tenant/renters" policies my agency writes are for within 5 miles of tidal water, and have to be written through a surplus lines carrier (Which means the company gets to set their own rates without the state regulating it) so the average is around $300-600 for the year, pretty much no matter what amount of coverage you select for your contents.

Do you think the fact that I live pretty close to the bay would affect mine? (Its over 500 before my discounts- 322 after)
I'm starting to think that has to be the problem.
We have additional coverage because FI is a mechanic and has alot of tools in our garage that were pretty costly, so ours covers up to $35/k.

I have a few policies, most are thru the state (I'm a state employee) so I don't pay for them, but I also have metlife, mine is only $12/month though for 150k in coverage. I'm also a non-smoker, and 24 years old, I got the policy when I was 21 and my rate really hasn't gone up. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Living on the coast, the way I've seen it is, the closer you are to water, the more you pay for it-tidal or not. Pretty much after Hurricane Katrina, most mainstream carriers wanted nothing to do with anything that could be considered a potential "flood zone", so they pulled out of coastal areas completely or made the rates insanely high.
So a lot of theses "surplus lines" carriers stepped in. Their rates aren't regulated by the state, but by basically whomever owns the company. So it tends to be a lot more expensive, and since mainstream carriers don't want to write the risks, it's not very competitive.

From what I've seen age is key. At 26 I can get a whole life policy for $200k for only $60 a month, but at 36 it's more of a risk for insurance companies that something will happen within 30 years.
It would make sense for the water to raise the rates, it would cause more risk of flooding or damage.

I have life insurance through my job and it's from Unum.
Life insurance I use Hartford through my work.
[QUOTE]Ours is through Progressive and I think it's about $200/year? I'm not exactly sure, that's one of the bills FI always takes care of. It covers $5000 in stolen/damaged goods though. That should take care of the big stuff, like our laptops and TV.

This is us too.
But, if you DONT already get a multi-line discount, yes you should get one under one policy.
I've been with State Farm for - almost 20 years. J's been with them for at least 10, because of the house, but he wanted coverage on the dirt bike, and they were the only ones who offered it, at least at the time.

It's like $250 a year, but we have an earthquake rider which adds another $200+ to it. Necessary, though. I think that's for, like, $50,000 in protection, too.
Edit: This is for a 2+ apartment, built in the 1920s, 1400 square feet, I think.
I need to remind FI to pay it this week, actually.
CA won't let unmarried couples share car insurance, so we're changing over in December when our current policies expire. I know having multiple cars and drivers on the same policy saves money over separate policies for each one, for sure.
