XP: Disney Fun for Adults?

I haven't been to Disney since I was maybe six years old...  My in-laws want us all to go on a 4-day Disney cruise followed by 8 days at the parks in Orlando.  We'd stay at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

My brother-in-law's twins will be 5 this summer so they will love it.  But are 12 days of Disney too much for us, since we don't have kids?

We're thinking about skipping the cruise and just catching up with them in Orlando for maybe 5 days instead.  What do you think?

  • Maybe it's because I'm 5 a heart, but we did 10 days at WDW for our HM, and I loved every minute of it. I want to go back ASAP.
  • You couldn't pay me to spend 1 day in disney, let alone 12.

I will go to raglan road with Mrs. B for Cider, and that's about as close as I'll get.

But I know a lot of people really like it. It's just not my bag.

  • Also, I think it just depends on what you like. I think that you have to have an appreciate for the Disney things to enjoy the shows and stuff. Also, if rides aren't your thing, then that's not going to help.

If you like rides and other attractions and don't hate Disney, you should be fine. But if you're not a fan of those things, then I would consider doing something else.
  • 12 is probably too much but 5 or 6 might be just about right.  Between all the shows and long lines for the most popular attractions, you could spend most of your time waiting in lines so you'd be suprised how many days you can spend per park if you hop.
You simply must see Fantasmic at the Studios!  Fabulous show!
Oh, and the Lion King and Nemo shows at Animal Kingdom are awesome!

  • I'm 99% sure that we're not doing the cruise.  That would be just too much magic...

So how many days should we stay in Orlando?  We don't want to feel rushed, but we also don't want to turn into pumpkins ;)

  • Oh, and we haven't done the cruise but some friends of ours have with their 2 girls  and there are adult only areas so you would probably "forget" the fact that you were on a Disney cruise if you pretty much stayed in those areas.  Dinner is usually a themed show of some sort with the characters.  Service iand attention to detail is fantastic according to them.

  • I think it depends on the time of year.  I went once in August and it was terrible just because it was so damn hot and humid.

But, yeah, I went to Disneyland a few years back and it was excellent.  I'd totally go.  If you wind up absolutely hating Disney itself, you can always chill by the pool or go explore the rest of Orlando and meet up with your family later for dinner.

No thank you (for me). I do know a woman who saves all of her money to go on disney cruises and to WDW on her vacations, shes my age. Different strokes for different folks, iguess, but I dont get it.
  • There is a lot of stuff for adults to do at Disney World and on their cruises.  I haven't taken a cruise so I don't know much about that but at DW you can do as many or as few rides as you want.  They have thinking like paddle boats, horseback riding, golfing, etc.  Downtown Disney even has Cirque de Soleil right now, I believe.

To be honest, I love DW and am going there for my honeymoon.  I am a little biased.

  • I'd suggest 5 days, 6 nights?  You can take a day off from the fam and Disney and pop over to Universal Studios...Harry Potter's World of Wizarding opens in June.

  • Eight days at Disney sounds like way too much. I'd consider 3 or 4 TOPS. They do have some fun things for adults and even some of the kids' areas are fun for grown-ups, but I can't imagine spending more than a week in a theme park.
  • EPCOT is probably the most adult park.  They serve beer and wine. :-)  When will you be down because March-may is the flower festival and then the everyone-must-do-before-they-die Food and Wine festival is October-November.

  • Thanks for the tips, everyone.  Unfortunately, they want to go in August!  Which is probably the last month I'd choose...  But because of the kids' vacation it works :(

Is it so hot and humid in August that you can't have fun?
  • OH I love Florida in August because it's 90 degrees and humid as hell.

I don't think most people like that.

Oh, it's brutal here in August and September.  Don't feel bad for hanging aroudn the pool and meeting up with the fam in the afternoons and evenings.  The great thign about being resort guests is that you get "after magic hours" where on different days/nights the different parks offer extended hours with your room key.  Usually in the summer, it's nights so you can go into the park much later in the day and stay longer into the night so you still feel like you've gotten your ticket's worth of time without having to be out in the humidity all day.

ETA: We're used to it so yes it's sticky and humid and sweat rolls down your back and you change bras every day but it's not the worst place to be in the summer.  Just wear a hat every day to keep your hair off your neck and your ears protected or wear your hair up and be sure to sunscreen your part, ears, and neck.  Of course, being from TX, you probably do that anyway. ;-)  Oh, and bring in your own water or buy one bottle and refill it all day.  It's aobut $2.50 per bottle of water.

  • I could do 2 or 3 days at Disney, tops. I've never been to DisneyWorld, though, only Disneyland. DL only has 2 theme parks, so maybe there's more to do at DW. Can you do stuff like SeaWorld or other Orlando stuff, too? Honestly, I might do the cruise, then a few days in Orlando. Like 4.

Are you serious about liking it?  I've never been to Florida in the summer, and I want to make sure I'm not exaggerating about the heat...  I tried telling DH that August is miserable.
  • I personally would do the cruise. It was more like a regular cruise with a few disney things to do. Like when we came into port we just went ot the islands to do fun stuff. When we were on the boat the only disney specific thing I remember is the theater they had did a stage production of a disney movie.. I think it was hercules at the time, but theyve done the lion king too I know. It's less "disney-y" if that makes any sense.

That being said, i love disney and could easily live there and have a time share there. I'm nuts though.

  • And I freaking hate hot and humid weather. Ugh. I can deal with Florida from November to February and that's it.

I'm going to Houston tomorrow. I hope it's not too bad.

  • Oh yeah, most people think it's horrible. I LOVE hot weather. Love it.

Granted, my vacations also consisted of being by the pool or beach for 12 hours a day in a swimsuit drinking pina coladas.

Never walking around in an amusement park in that weather. Uffda.

  • In August is typically when Disney has their Free Dining offer, so make sure you take advantage of that, and book your reservations in advance, especially for bigger groups.  It's incredibly difficult to get walk up seating at the restaurants in the parks.

Like others have said, I think for you 5 days is enough.  If you get the Park Hopper option, when you get bored of one park you can take the bus or monorail to another that day.  I love Hollywood Studios and Epcot.  You can also do both Universal Parks in one day (but if you decide to only do one of them, Islands of Adventure is the one that has the Harry Potter area).  Downtown Disney has some good food options to - I love Earl of Sandwich.

  • Nope

I did many trips to Disney and Epcot when M was growing up and I'm not going back.
  • I personally hate FL in August and I live here.  I would never go to a theme park that time of year.

But if you're worried about too much Disney, I would go on the cruise and then do a couple days in Orlando.  Disney cruises really aren't that much Disney.

I personally would love to take that vacation, but I'm a Disney and theme park fanatic.
  • Our HM was a 10 day trip to Disney. We stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge (it was awesome!). We had a blast. We're going back for 9 days for our 1 year anniversary (along with my niece, brother, and SIL).

There is a ton to do at Disney for adults. Disney cruises supposedly have a lot of adult activities as well.

I think you'll be fine going that long. It'll be hot, but you don't have to be in the parks all day. Go early in the morning, go back to the hotel in the afternoon, and then go back in the evenings.

  • I went on a Disney cruise when I was 14, and I had a blast.  I want to go again because when I was younger I was jealous of all the grownups.  We're thinking about that for our HM.

The park itself is not just characters and rides.  It is possible and very easy for adults to have fun.  Animal Kingdom is a fun resort.  AMAZING food.

FI's family goes at least twice a year: in October for Food and Wine, and for a girls-only trip (his mom is one of 6 girls) in the spring with all the daughters and girl cousins.
