That's true, of course. But to a certain extent. Buffalo doesn't have that many multi-million dollar properties. Last time I looked into it (for comparison's sake) the number of properties "worth" more than $2 million was in the single digits. In the entire county. There's no need for property worth that much in an area where people don't MAKE that much and where there's high unemployment, consistently.

Did you ever see the episode of Entourage where the real estate agent showed Vince what he could buy in LA for a million dollars? It was a 4 bedroom house in a nice area. That's not really an exaggeration.
In Response to Re: Laugh at this moron with me : I've lived in Buffalo, Ithaca and Watertown (my parents live there, though I've never rented there) and my brother lives in the Syracuse area. I have many friends who still live in Buffalo and Ithaca. My mother is a real estate agent in the north country. I can't really think of a major urban area that would more expensive than any of those places. (Except, maybe Poughkeepsie, which would be at the outer reaches of the NYC area anyway.) I concede I don't know much about the capital region real estate market. Edit: While this is anecdotal, I have a friend who bought a house outside Rochester a few years ago and prices seemed to be similar to Buffalo and Watertown. Also, I live in Los Angeles, so my view of "cheap" housing is skewed. Anyone who can get a decent house in a decent area for $350k or less is insanely lucky, IMO. That doesn't happen in the LA metro area. Especially not in good school districts (which don't really exist here, anyway).
    Posted by msmerymac
Do most people in LA rent? I just looked at the median income for LA and I found it was $40k. Seems that if this is true, only famous celebs and overpaid doctors could afford a house.

I'm just curious about life on the West Coast in general. Around here it's cheaper to pay a mortgage than it is to keep renting.

Yup. It's crazy what the average income is versus the average house price. Based on what people can REALLY afford, only 10% of people in LA county can afford a house. (Meaning, if housing takes about 25%-30% of your income, including utilities, taxes and renovations.) We sure as crap can't afford to buy anything and our combined income is more than $40k.

I know one person around my age who owns property in LA, and I'm pretty sure her parents gave her the down payment or else made a substantial contribution to it (plus she has a roommate - it's a condo). Her parents are very well off, though. The other people I know who own are my older coworkers, some of whom bought 15-20 years ago. And in the San Fernando Valley, not LA proper. Although houses in the SFV are still a good $500k for something decent. And still in the LA Unified School District.

  • When we were on our way back from NY two weeks ago, H was telling me everything that was on it, and I was disgusted, but I want one so badly. Then I said, 'Dummy, we stayed in Rochester for 2 nights, why didn't we go there for dinner one night?" And he said "Well, you know. I had other stuff on my mind, like my grandma dying." Way to make me feel like an asshole H.

Interesting. I'm not going to say buying isn't a steal in Buffalo, either. I recently looked up the price of my parents' first house. They bought it for $65k in 1983 and it's now worth about $200k, after the current owners added an addition. Quite a jump, but still a good price. It's in Williamsville, which is a nice suburb if you know where that is.

I get the feeling there's more weath in Rochester than Buffalo. I mean, Tom Golisano is from Rochester. The "wealth" in Buffalo is old and disappearing.

Maratea - the food in Buffalo is great. Try Ted's hotdogs. Did you have wings? Tell me you had wings. The best beef on weck is Charlie the Butcher, but Anderson's is good too. And LaNova pizza. You should definitely go to Rochester for a garbage plate.

  • Anyone from NY coming to IN soon? If so, please deliver a garbage plate to me.
  • Rochester does tend to be seen as a very wealthy area, dating as far back as George Eastman (founder of Eastman Kodak), and I'm sure further than that.  That probably does tend to have a lot to do with it, but I know I could never afford a home in the area I'm currently renting.  The average for the homes in my town is something like 1.2 million (or was the last time I checked).

Love Entourage, I wish Wes would spring for HBO.

Are you saying that like it's a lot of money?  Because 4 bedroom houses in Charlotte sell for $1,000,000 too.  Myers Park--4 bedroom houses on postage-stamp sized lots, average selling price is 1.7 mil.

  • Well hey,. I agree with both you guys. Million dollar houses are too rich for my blood. :-)

Thankfully, if we move to NC, it will be Raleigh.

If we move to Boston, we'll be screwed out of real estate there too.

  • Ha, yeah B, that's kinda dumb. Around here, houses near lakes are horrendously overpriced. My aunt and uncle live on Wawasee, which anyone from this area knows is only for rich people, unless your family has had a house there for 50 years. There are some celebs that have houses on the lake. I think aunt and uncle paid around $2 million for their place and they had to do some work to the house. Just ridic.
  • Celebrities are starting to buy lake houses on the Finger Lakes up here.  There are huge articles in the paper each time one of them buys one.

Finger Lakes are gorgeous, though. I don't blame them.

My dad lives right on Lake Ontatio, but that's property that's been in my family since the 1930s. My mom lives within spitting distance of the lake, but... they both live in the middle of nowhere, so there's that.
